Cirque Royal presents PETROUCHKA and THE FIREBIRD, running Nov. 15 to Dec. 15.
Petrouchka & The Firebird are two works that have revealed the young Igor Stravinsky to the world, before he made scandal with his mythical Rite of Spring. Both musics were composed to be performed on stage with dance, and are both heirs to classical ballet, which developed strongly in Russia in the late nineteenth century, and Russian post-Romantic music that interested in popular traditions. That's why two Russian tales are their source of inspiration. Stravinsky's music has gone through the ages and their narrative constructions are so rich that every era can reinterpret them. With Laurent Brandenbourger, we invented two stories intrinsically in keeping with music, compelling to never use recited text on the stage.
These stories will be performed by dancers and circus performers, sometimes using surprising techniques, sometimes representing a human puppet, sometimes a flying bird-man, and giving the show a magical and magical aspect striking. PETROUCHKA deals more with manipulation, physical and mental themes that have always fascinated me and have been the basis of some of my shows. Here, as in a silent film, four characters are involved in a playful plot in which, in turn, everyone tries to pull the strings. THE FIREBIRD explores the worlds of the unconscious and the sometimes repressed desire of self-transcendence and rebirth. If man can teach to fly to another, without himself being able to do so, it is probably because he is unconsciously afraid of being confronted with this dangerous freedom.
