Way Off Broadway's 2011 Season, its 17th season of live first-class entertainment to Frederick, does not officially open until the theatre's production of the musical comedy The Drowsy Chaperone takes its first bow on Friday, January 21st. Only days after that, Way Off Broadway will hold auditions for its spring production, South Pacific. Auditions for the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic will be held on Monday, January 24th.

Set in an island paradise during World War II, two parallel love stories are threatened by the dangers of prejudice and war. Nellie Forbush, a spunky nurse from Arkansas, falls in love with a mature French planter, Emile. Nellie learns that the mother of his children was an island native and, unable to turn her back on the prejudices with which she was raised, refuses Emile's proposal of marriage. Meanwhile, the strapping Lt. Joe Cable denies himself the fulfillment of a future with an innocent Tonkinese girl with whom he's fallen in love out of the same fears that haunt Nellie. When Emile is recruited to accompany Joe on a dangerous mission, Nellie realizes that life is too short not to seize her own chance for happiness, thus confronting and conquering her prejudices.

Auditions will be held on Monday evening, January 24th beginning at 6:30 p.m. at The Way Off Broadway Dinner Theatre located along Route 40 West, Frederick's Golden Mile. Those auditioning are asked to bring a headshot and resume, as well as 16 bars of prepared music and be ready to sing, read from the script, and move. All roles are open and non-union paying. Those auditioning for adult roles should be 18 years old or older. Those auditioning for the two children's roles (1 boy and 1 girl) should be between 9 and 12 years old and no taller than 5'2". All ethnicities are encouraged to audition - a complete list of casting notes and character details has been posted on the theatre's website, www.wayoffbroadway.com. No appointments are necessary.

The show will run April 1 - June 5, 2011 with performances every Friday and Saturday evening, matinees on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sunday of each month, and select Sunday evenings.
