The Strand Theater proudly presents The Glory of Living by Rebecca Gilman. The Glory of Living runs from October 7th thru October 23rd. This will be the kick-off show to the Strand's 3rd season.
The Glory of Living follows the journey of Lisa, a 16-year old southern girl who grows up surrounded by abuse. A girl in a trailer park, a prostitute mother, and the charm of an older man leads to a roller-coaster ride of tragedy. Lisa's life continues to spiral out of control following her husband's path of sexual thrill through rape until the law catches up to both of them. Her future and her life are at stake as accusations of murder emerge. A girl who has always been alone in the world now faces her life crashing down around her. In a play built on broken-down values, the audience must ask themselves: how can Lisa be judged so easily?

The Strand Theater Company is dedicated to producing works by women with roles for women. Fitting to the mission, The Glory of Living by Rebecca Gilman follows the struggle of Lisa, a young Southern runaway. For the last three years, the Strand has been a powerhouse of strong, female characters. "It's important for the Strand to produce plays that not only portray the successes of women, but the struggles as well. The Strand is not just about pushing a warrior-feminist image; it is also about representing women surviving the human existence," says Jayme Kilburn, Artistic Director of the Strand.

Rebecca Gilman graduated from Birmingham-Southern College, and earned a Master of Fine Arts from the Iowa Playwrights Workshop at the University of Iowa. She lives in Chicago and serves on the board of the Dramatists Guild of America. She is the first American playwright to win the Evening Standard Award and was awarded the 2008 Harper Lee Award. The Glory of Living was written in 1998 and was a finalist for the Pultizer Prize in Drama in 2002 and was produced at the MCC Theater in New York, directed by Phillip Seymour Hoffman and starring Anna Paquin and Jeffery Donovan. Enjoying the success of many other performances, this play continues to push the boundaries of theater and expose the naked reality of human life.

Blurb- The Glory of Living tells the story of Lisa, a 16-year-old girl, and her marriage to Clint, an ex-con twice her age. Systematically abused by her husband, Lisa is coerced into helping him commit crimes of varying magnitude, including murder.
