The Long Christmas Ride Home Plays Single Carrot Theatre, Closes 4/17

By:

Single Carrot Theatre presents The Long Christmas Ride Home by Pulitzer Prize winner and Maryland native Paula Vogel. Told in part through puppetry and set on the outskirts of Washington D.C. (inside the Beltway) we follow the journey of a family on their annual Christmas trek and explores the age-old question Why does my family suck so much? Known for such brilliant works as The Baltimore Waltz, Hot n' Throbbing and How I Learned to Drive, Vogel is perhaps the most prolific voice in contemporary American playwriting. Unafraid to tackle life's toughest issues: infidelity, terminal illness, sex, love and personal freedom, The Long Christmas Ride Home indulges the urge to stand up and scream "HOW DID THIS END UP BEING MY LIFE?!?!". Sincere, thought-provoking, heart-breaking and hilarious, Vogel's journey is one unlike any you've seen before. Performed by Baltimore's Best Ensemble (City Paper, 2010), The Long Christmas Ride Home takes an old tale of a Christmas road trip and turns it around so the soft, seedy underbelly of a typical American family is exposed.

You may be asking:

WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU PEOPLE RUIN SPRING BY PERFORMING A "CHRISTMAS PLAY"?
Well the short answer is that the playwright encourages companies to produce this piece outside the Christmas season, so that's a factor. The more involved answer is that it isn't a Christmas Play, per se, it's a family's story set at Christmas, in the same way you can feel the heat in Tennessee William's southern masterpieces even when you watch them in November, so too will the chilly, crisp air of Christmas permeate our intimate space even deep into Spring. The third answer is that The Long Christmas Ride Home is simply a beautiful play, any time of year.

THE BASICS~

WHAT :
The Long Christmas Ride Home
By Paula Vogel
Directed by Jessica Garrett

Pulitzer Prize Winner Paula Vogel delicately depicts a troubled family's snowy Christmas Eve road trip in this theatrical homage to Thorton Wilder's The Happy Journey to Trenton and Camden. Both delightful and despairing The Long Christmas Ride Home unearths the lifelong effects of trauma and sexual alienation through the use of Bunraku-inspired puppetry.
