Theatre Project is pleased to announce Maryland native and award-winning artist Sidney Pink has been hired as the Curator of the John Fonda Gallery located at Theatre Project in Baltimore.

For Pink, the job at Theatre Project represents a return to an organization he called home for many years. Pink started working at Theatre Project in 1998 as an intern while he was a student at the Maryland institute College of Art. Pink served as the Gallery Coordinator of the John Fonda Gallery from 2001-2004.

"I am thrilled to be returning to Theatre Project after being away for so many years," said Pink. "I am passionate about the Baltimore arts scene and look forward to again being an advocate for Baltimore artists. I want the John Fonda Gallery at Theatre Project to be know in it's own right as a venue that's showcasing exciting contemporary art."

The gig of Curator will be a part-time position for Sidney. He is also currently the Marketing & Public Relations Coordinator at Chesapeake Arts Center in Brooklyn Park, MD. "My work at John Fonda Gallery will be a natural compliment to what I am doing at the Chesapeake Arts Center," said Pink. "At both organizations I am getting the word out about the exciting arts scene in Baltimore. Despite the current economy, there is a momentum of excitement for the arts in Baltimore."

Pink has plans to revamp the mission of the John Fonda Gallery. "I want the work we are doing to be both relevant and accessible to the diverse population of Baltimore," said Pink. "I want to design exhibitions that bring in new and younger audiences to the gallery. Theatre Project is already doing this with family friendly shows and the Musical Theatre Summer Camp for teens this summer."

After curating the show "Marching for Digits" this June, Pink's first official exhibition will be the galleries Artscape offering, "Unexplained Forces," which will be up July 16-August 16, 2009. The opening will be on July 16, 2009 from 6-8pm. The exhibition features seven regional artists who explore the nature of line through paintings and drawings. Featuring a variety of styles, this show takes the viewer through hidden narratives, rich textures, and playful compositions.

Pink grew up in Hagerstown Maryland and graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art with a bachelor's degree in Fine Art in 2001.

From 2001 to 2004 Pink served as the Gallery Coordinator of the John Fonda Gallery. He worked with guest curators and curated exhibitions featuring the work of then emerging artists, such as Seth Adelsberger and Jackie Milad. Pink also curated a show of Baltimore posters featuring the then emerging work of "Post Typography." During this time Pink developed a relationship with Baltimore's Spur Design that lead to the now classic theatre posters that Spur designs for Theatre Project each season.

In addition to his work as Gallery Coordinator at the John Fonda Gallery, Pink worked as the Production Coordinator at Theatre Project from 2001-2003. Pink also worked as the Assistant to the Managing Director at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company in Washington D.C. from 2003 to 2004.

In 2004 Pink moved to Japan where he focused on creating his own art. Over the past 5 years Pink has exhibited in New York, Baltimore, San Francisco, L.A., and Tokyo. While in Japan, Pink was nominated for a Jury Prize at Takashi Murakami's art festival, 'GEISAI Museum 2.' In a review of Pink's art work, Japanzine magazine described Pink as, "one of Japan's most inspirational gaijin [foreign] artists." Pink currently exhibits work with Giant Robot in San Francisco and New York.

On a side note, Pink married his wife April on stage at Theatre Project in 2003. Pink now lives in Hampden.

Since 1971, Theatre Project has been providing a distinct cultural experience for the citizens of Baltimore by presenting new, innovative, and diverse works in the arts. John Fonda Gallery located at Theatre Project is committed to exhibiting the work of emerging artists and new work by recognized artists. The gallery is dedicated to presenting diverse programs that make contemporary art accessible to a broad audience.

The John Fonda Gallery at Theatre Project was dedicated on January 14, 1993 to the memory of John Fonda, who served as curator of the gallery and nurtured Baltimore arts and artists.
