SWEENEY TODD and AND THEN THERE WERE NONE Come to The Highwood Theatre

Two unlikely partners in theatrical crime are primed to thrill Silver Spring audiences this Summer: first, The Highwood Theatre presents a deliciously reinvented Summer Musical production of SWEENEY TODD (July 26 - August 4, 2019) followed by their two-week Acting Intensive Company's production of And Then There Were None (August 2 & 3).

Set in Victorian London, Sondheim's gloriously bloody SWEENEY TODD: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street returns to the Highwood stage after 7 years - gathering 21 actors to tell the musical tale of a vengeful barber. Meanwhile, Agatha Christie's murder mystery And Then There Were None - produced in just 2 weeks as part of an annual acting conservatory - summons eight strangers to a British island for an undisclosed purpose. One by one they disappear in the order of the "Ten Little Soldiers" nursery rhyme: how do they stop the cycle before it's too late? Highwood's trademark motto of "anyone can do theatre" carries over into both productions through inclusive all-student casts and technical crews.

While one wouldn't normally associate the work of Stephen Sondheim with that of Agatha Christie, their thematic parallels are all the more prominent for theatregoers in Highwood's back-to-back summer productions - most clearly, the cyclical nature of revenge and violence. For one, SWEENEY TODD has been reconceived in a modern pie shop setting where the actors serve as storytellers of the present - guiding audiences through the twists and turns of the past; And Then There Were None relies on mirrors and candlelight to deliver a nightmarish look at the darkness within us all.

Artistic Director Matthew Nicola elaborates on the timeless nature of both plays: "This year's summer lineup offers a rare and exciting learning opportunity for our student actors as we pull theatre back to its storytelling roots. It's no surprise that these stories remain as intriguing and shocking as ever for a 21st century audience." Director of And Then There Were None Liz Daingerfield continues: "As in any good thriller, audiences will be forced to question everything they think they know and to ask themselves - at what point can the cycle be broken?"

SWEENEY TODD and And Then There Were None run for limited engagements this Summer at 1000 Spring Street in downtown Silver Spring; Sweeney Todd runs Friday, July 26 - Sunday, August 4, while And Then There Were None runs Friday, August 2 - Saturday, August 3.
