FOLLIES Closes 2/28 at Theatre Hopkins
In celebration of Stephen Sondheim's 80th birthday this year, Theatre Hopkins opened its 88th season with a concert version of the legendary musical Follies. With book by James Goldman and featuring Stephen Sondheim's celebrated score and lyrics, Follies will run through Sunday, Feb. 28, at the Swirnow Theater on the Johns Hopkins University's Homewood campus, 3400 N. Charles St. in Baltimore.
Winner of seven Tony awards, including "Best Score" for Sondheim, and the Drama Critics Circle Award for "Best Musical," Follies opened at the Winter Garden Theatre on April 4, 1971, and ran for 522 performances.
The cast features local theater veterans Nancy Asendorf as Sally, Jeff Burch as Ben, Patty Coleman as Phyllis, Ken Ewing as Buddy, and Eileen Aubele as Carlotta.
Also included in the cast of 21 are Tom Burns, Amy Pierson, Robert E. Tucker and Becca Vourvoulas. Completing the company are Gail Anderson, Harriet BusH Clark, Elisa Dugan, Joey Hellman, Nan Kaestner, Jim Knost, Elton Elizabeth Knupp, Michael O'Connell, Larry Polen, Elizabeth Salkov and Beth Weber. Todd Pearthree will direct and choreograph and Douglas Lawler will be musical director.
Opening in June will be the area premiere of a new high spirited musical, The Glorious Ones, created by the Tony Award-winning team of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, whose book and music were honored for their musical Ragtime.
