Winners of the prestigious 2009 Sondheim Prize, Baltimore Development Cooperative (BDC) is an evolving collaborative effort that blurs the line between art and activism with objects, performances, actions, and interventions that provoke the viewer into a deeper engagement with the politics and design of urban spaces. BDC Projects have ranged from: The Pavilion, a geodesic dome made of recycled materials that functioned as a public studio, kitchen and meeting space; Participation Park, an empty lot in East Baltimore that BDC is squatting and repurposing as a garden and public green space; and STEW (with Red Emma's), an elaborate, ongoing series of dinners using sustainable foods and raising money and awareness for creative and social justice initiatives.

This fall, BDC gathers a caucus of artists, educators, activists, urban planners, gardeners, and chefs to convert the Creative Alliance's Main Gallery at The Patterson into the headquarters for a celebratory, mobile farmers market - selling food, sharing ideas, and shedding light on the limited availability of fresh, healthy food to most city residents. Alongside a borrowed Arabbers' cart and one designed and built by BDC are video, photographs, and art activities. The carts and trailers leave the building periodically - sometimes with marching bands in tow - to visit neighborhoods and festivals, with fresh produce and a revolving assortment of activities and information.

THE FOOD NETWORK is organized by Scott Berzofsky, Hannah Brancato, Dane Nester, Kitt Repass, Kyle Smith, Nick Petr, Michael Petruzzo, and Nick Wisnewski.

THE FOOD NETWORK opens Sat Sep 18 in conjunction with the preview screening of Cafeteria Man, the much-anticipated documentary about Tony Geraci's campaign to reform the food in the Baltimore City Public Schools system, with yummy local food available from Hampstead Hill Academy' s Culinary Arts Club, Great Kids Farms, and STEW.

Steven Silberg: Digital Elements
Closing reception Sat Sep 25, 5:30-7:30pm
On view Sep 9-25
Early photographic pioneers like Muybridge, Marey and Eakins conducted time lapse movement studies that shaped how we perceive visual information, laying the foundation for cubism and modern film editing. In a similar fashion, digital artist Steven Silberg focuses on the element at the core of today's visual technology -the pixel - with video, prints, and an interactive photo booth that takes your picture, one pixel at a time.

Morgan Monceaux: Divas
Opens Thu Oct 21, 5:30-7:30pm
On view Oct 21-Nov 6
Self-taught painter Morgan Monceaux was born in Louisiana, studied theology and music, served in Vietnam, and opened galleries of black artists in Seattle and San Francisco before Grace Jones' Slave to the Rhythm inspired him to pick up a brush himself. Today his brightly colored, idiosyncratic portraits of presidents and jazz legends are in the collection of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery and have exhibited at AVAM, the Library of Congress and several presidential libraries. Divas presents a pantheon of celebrated opera singers in full regalia. Presented by New Door Creative.

Leo Hussey
Opens Thu Nov 11, 5:30-7:30pm
On view Nov 11-27
In his exquisite sketches and collaged constructions, Leo Hussey combines the idiosyncracy of the self-taught artist with meticulous attention to craft. A former comics contributor to City Paper, he's spent countless hours recently studying the collection of the Baltimore Museum of Art, resulting in works that are strange (in the true sense), sometimes shocking, and always beautiful.
