If home is where the heart is, then Lorna Luft's 54 Below debut is her homecoming performance. Luft recently took the time out of her busy touring schedule to discuss the things she loves best: cabarets, Christmas in New York, and of course her lovely mother, Judy Garland.
Today, the Broadway community celebrates the birthday of Tony-nominated composer Frank Wildhorn. Below, BroadwayWorld brings you a video flashback of Wildhorn's Broadway career!
Do you ever go to a night of theatre positive that you'll leave there feeling something? Going into 'Broadway's Next H!t Musical' at the Performing Arts Center at Georgia Southern, I was pretty sure the show would either be really funny or ridiculously lame.
Joseph Marcell is best known for his role on the hit '90s sitcom, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, in which he played Geoffrey, the butler. Since then, this former comedy star has taken up Shakespeare and is now on an international tour as the title character in The Globe Theatre's production of KING LEAR. He took the time to speak with BroadwayWorld about the Shakespearean experience, audiences' reactions around the world, and the challenges of such a role.
Conductor Todd Ellison is quite possibly one of the busiest men in the industry right now. His involvement in the fast-approaching production of THE BAND WAGON with Encores!, a Christmas concert with the Pittsburgh Symphony, and his own staged musical in March, only begin to scratch the surface of his hectic schedule for the next six months. Fortunately for us, he recently took the time to sit down and discuss these as well as prior engagements.
During Georgia Southern University's one-act production of John Cariani's ALMOST, MAINE, the most frequent question I asked myself was first, 'Why did those hooligans on the front row come to see this show?' and second, 'Is that a new character?' Student shows of course come with student patrons, but unruly ones have great potential to ruin a production- and these distracting young people very nearly did. And I must say that in a show full of short vignettes, concentration was vital. Thus from a 'kids these days' approach did I view this play, wishing I had brought a cane to wave in frustration.
Broadway veteran Phyllis Newman has not only graced the stage with performers such as Bernadette Peters and Donna McKechnie, and worked directly with other Broadway greats such as Leonard Bernstein, but she was even nominated for a Tony Award against Barbra Streisand- and won! Despite her extensive career and success, she finds her greatest joy and pride in the work of her husband, the late Tony Award-winning lyricist Adolph Green. In light of his upcoming 100th birthday and the opening of his first masterpiece, ON THE TOWN, Newman graciously shared with us her experiences as a Broadway veteran and wife of a lyricist.
RACE, presented by the Georgia Southern University Theatre and Performance program, explores the heated issue of discrimination from multiple perspectives, with an emphasis, not surprisingly, on racism.
Broadway and West End producer Judith Ann Abrams has been involved with multiple ground-breaking and multi-award-winning shows in the last 15 years. But when talking to her, it is clear that her passion really lies in a crazy dream she had at age 23 that gained her notoriety in the Broadway community: the Pixie Judy Troupe.
Elena Shaddow has been making her mark on musical theatre ever since her Broadway debut in LES MIS during her senior year at NYU. So when she takes the stage in her first solo concert at 54 Below on Saturday night, she will be bringing a new meaning to "The Golden Age of Broadway."
Actress Anjali Bhimani is quite possibly Mary Zimmerman's biggest fan. After working with Zimmerman many times, Ms. Bhimani raves about the successful director's notoriously organic, inspiration-led process. She is clearly in love with the Zimmerman method.
Y'all, it's the end of the road tonight for the contestants on NBC's The Voice. Tonight, the winner of season 3 was decided. So, look out, there are spoilers ahead! The artists from Teams CeeLo Green and Blake Shelton were joined by not only famous artists like Kelly Clarkson, but also contestants who were eliminated earlier this season.
After the last two weeks' eliminations on NBC's The Voice, I really I didn't know what to believe in anymore. Two weeks ago, an extremely talented fan favorite, Dez Duron, was sent home, and last week Adam Levine's last two mentees, including powerhouse rocker Amanda Brown, left as well. It's times like those when you just have to wonder what all of the voters in America were thinking. So tonight, the Fab Four became only three, and I was bracing myself for another one of my favorites to leave. At the start of tonight's show, the only contestants left were from Teams CeeLo Green and Blake Shelton. So don that more than adequate pessimism and let the nerve-wracking evening begin!
The results show tonight included some great performances, (including special guests: the Muppets) but also some ridiculously nerve-wracking moments, as the audience waited to see who America saved and which two would have to go home.
Monday night, November 26, began week four of the live shows, getting down to the best of the best, because there are only eight singers left. Three from Team CeeLo Green, two from Teams Adam Levine and Blake Shelton, and only one from Team Christina all performed tonight in groups and individually, hoping to make it to the top six. They sang their hearts out, knowing that their journey could end this week.
The results shows are very fun, because it's an hour of variety in which the coaches actually get to show off why they are part of this singing show. This is something that distinguishes The Voice on NBC from other shows like it. Another fun part is that the contestants get to sing together, and they can relax because they are not being judged on their performance. Then of course there are the guest performers, like Rascal Flatts tonight. All of those elements were part of tonight's results show, which revealed the Top 8 by the end.
The Top 10 on NBC's The Voice took the stage tonight, vying to keep their spots on the show. The stakes were very high because the decision is completely up to America to vote for their favorite. No coaches can save them now. So Christina Aguilera's last two contestants performed, as well as Blake Shelton's two, Adam Levine's three, and CeeLo Green's three.
Last night on NBC's The Voice, the top three contestants from each team performed, and after the show, America voted on who to keep and who to boot off. So tonight, Carson Daly revealed The Voice Season 3's Top Ten!
The Top Twelve Live Rounds began tonight after last week, which was the first week of voting. The top twelve contestants from Teams CeeLo Green, Adam Levine, Christina Aguilera, and Blake Shelton sang tonight, allowing fans to yet again vote for their favorites after the show ended. But this time, the coaches don't get to save anyone. It's completely up to the people now.
Remember, remember the fifth of November… The Live Playoffs on NBC's The Voice are off and running as of tonight! Singers from Teams Adam Levine and Blake Shelton braved the stage and the wild crowd to pursue their dreams. Adam said, "It's like a more serious Olympics." In the Live Playoffs, all five of the contestants from each team perform, and this time, it's up to America to decide who gets to stay and who goes home.
