Sundance Institute today announced that it has established a first-of-its-kind Tennessee Williams Award to honor emerging playwrights who have participated in its Theatre Program Labs. Permission was given by The University of the South, the beneficiary of the Williams' estate.

Jim Henson, renowned puppeteer, director, and-most famously-creator of the Muppets, faithfully kept a journal where he stored ideas, sketches, and one-line log entries about his life and work. Dubbed "The Red Book," it is the subject of a popular blog maintained by Karen Falk, Archivist for The Jim Henson Company (www.henson.com/jimsredbook). Now this diary is the subject of a new book by Falk, Imagination Illustrated: The Jim Henson Journal (2012, Chronicle Books), featuring excerpts from Henson's journal, rare sketches, ideas, and photographs. Throughout, Falk offers behind-the-scenes details into Henson's writings and drawings, as well as insights into Henson's life, his magical creations, and his artistic process.

Due to high demand for tickets, Steppenwolf Theatre Company adds three additional public performances to the world premiere of Markus Zusak'sThe Book Thief, adapted by Heidi Stillman, directed by Hallie Gordon, after selling out all school and public performances-including the previously announced extension. The production now closes on Sunday, November 11 and plays in Steppenwolf's Upstairs Theatre (1650 N Halsted St); this is the final extension. Los Angeles Philharmonic Association President Deborah Borda has announced the appointment of Gail Samuel to the position of Chief Operating Officer. In this post, Samuel will oversee operations at the Hollywood Bowl, management of the Philharmonic orchestra, programming of jazz, world music, orchestral pops and pop/rock presentations by the Association at both the Hollywood Bowl and Walt Disney Concert Hall, concert production, public relations and community affairs. Samuel will be a key liaison to the County of Los Angeles.

In honor of National Opera Week, The Atlanta Opera is inviting the Atlanta community to participate in #OperaSleuthATL, an Online Opera Scavenger Hunt, October 29 to November 2, 2012. Participants can become "opera detectives" by uncovering clues scattered throughout Atlanta, and photographing progress along the way. Detectives will be challenged to solve opera riddles, find venues, take pictures and submit their evidence to the Atlanta Opera's Facebook and Twitter pages or email using the hashtag #OperaSleuthATL.
