Brooklyn Museum, Boston's Museum of Fine Arts Receive NEA Grant for John Singer Sargent Exhibition

National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Chairman Rocco Landesman announced that the Brooklyn Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, are among 832 nonprofit organizations nationwide to receive NEA Art Works grants. The Brooklyn Museum and the MFA have been recommended a $50,000 grant to support the exhibition John Singer Sargent Watercolors, a collaborative project of the two museums.

MCC Theater has announced that MCC Playwright-in-Residence Neil LaBute will direct the world premiere of his new play, Reasons to Be Happy, as part of its 2012-13 Season. Performances of Reasons to Be Happy begin at the Lucille Lortel Theatre (121 Christopher Street, NYC) on May 16, 2013 and continue through June 23, 2013. An official opening is set for June 2, 2012 at 6:30 p.m. Additional information, including complete casting, will be announced shortly.

On Monday, November 19, the membership of the Audience Development Corporation honored the Castillo Theatre with wins in all five of the categories in which it was nominated for the Vivian Robinson AUDELCO Recognition Awards for Excellence in Black Theatre (aka the Viv Awards) for its production of Sally and Tom (The American Way) by Fred Newman and Annie Roboff, directed by Gabrielle L. Kurlander. The musical looks at the relationship between Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings, his slave and mistress for 30 years, exploring the tragic contradiction at the heart of American history and culture.

Garden State Players plans to Rock the Bayshore Saturday, Dec. 8 in a concert to benefit the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund and RAINE Foundation. The concert, which will be held in Raritan High School, 419 Middle Road, Hazlet, at 7:30 p.m. (doors open at 7 p.m.), will feature a variety of local talent covering songs from various artists including Adele, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Christina Aguilera, Janis Joplin, Carrie Underwood, Mama's and the Papa's, Frank Sinatra, Bruce Springsteen, Fun and Alicia Keys. Tickets are $18/ person and may be purchased online at http://www.gardenstateplayers.org/.
