When speech professor Henry Higgins makes a bet with a fellow scholar that he can pass off a common Cockney flower girl as the pinnacle of English society, he proves to be an expert in phonetics but a novice with people. Directed by Nicholas Martin (Broadway's Butley with Nathan Lane and Present Laughter with Victor Garber), Pygmalion is a charming classic full of wit and humor.

Ohio State's Department of Theatre Presents TWELFTH NIGHT, Beginning 2/1
January 15, 2013

Ohio State Theatre returns to the Lincoln Theatre following the success of last year's Macbeth with this 60-minute adaptation, intended to introduce young audiences to the joys of Shakespeare and his language. Twelfth Night tells the tale of the topsy-turvy world of Illyria, where a wise clown guides the way through a knotty maze of disguises, practical jokes, and the ever-complicated pursuit of love. A delightful cast of characters shows us the effects of revelry pushed to the limit, and how a couple of outsiders can create balance amidst the chaos.

Cutting Ball Theater Presents THE CHAIRS, 3/1-31
Cutting Ball Theater Presents THE CHAIRS, 3/1-31
January 15, 2013

Cutting Ball Theater continues its 14th season with Eugene Ionesco's THE CHAIRS, in a new translation by Rob Melrose. This tragic farce, in the tradition of Cutting Ball's hit productions of Ionesco's The Bald Soprano (2010) and Victims of Duty (2008), is as comedic as it is heartbreaking. THE CHAIRS follows an elderly couple who pass their time in an abandoned seaside building playing private games and telling each other half-remembered stories. Adrift in a world of their own, the Old Man resolves to convey his wisdom to a lifetime of friends, but while the Old Woman frantically sets out chairs, all of their invited guests appear to be imaginary. An eccentric meditation on the human condition, THE CHAIRS humorously blurs the line between fantasy and hallucination as the couple's game becomes their reality. Directed by Annie Elias (Tenderloin), and featuring David Sinaiko, Tamar Cohn, and Derek Fischer, Melrose's new translation offers a fresh take on this absurdist masterpiece.

bergenPAC Presents An Acoustic Evening with Matisyahu, 2/12
bergenPAC Presents An Acoustic Evening with Matisyahu, 2/12
January 14, 2013

When Matisyahu emerged in 2004 with his debut album, Shake Off the Dust...Arise, his musical persona seemed a novelty to some. Here was a Hasidic Jew -- dressed in a black suit with a broad-brimmed black hat worn over a yarmulke, and sporting a full, untrimmed beard -- who nevertheless performed toasting raps about the glories of traditional Judaism over reggae beats in a dancehall style directly from Jamaica. Moreover, he punctuated his performances with stage diving. It may have seemed like a joke at first, but Matisyahu was serious about his craft, and his diverse style soon garnered Grammy nominations, gold record certifications, and a broad audience.
