Freedom will ring, thunder and boom this summer as Macy's 4th of July Fireworks®, the nation's largest display of patriotic firepower returns to celebrate Independence Day. An awe-inspiring spectacle of color, light and sound will rumble over New York City on Monday, July 4th at 9:00 pm, as Macy's dazzling celebration ends the holiday with a bang. With more than 3 million live spectators and millions tuned in nationwide, the Hudson River will be the showcase for more than 40,000 fireworks that together will ignite the sky for the nation's 235th birthday party.
The Museum of Modern Art announces a complete retrospective of the works of filmmaker Kathryn Bigelow (American, b. 1951). Crafting Genre: Kathryn Bigelow, June 1 through August 13, 2011, in The Roy and Niuta Titus Theaters, offers the filmmaker's eight features. As a writer, director, and producer, Bigelow has received numerous honors, most notably Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Directing for her most recent war drama, The Hurt Locker (2008), a new MoMA acquisition. Crafting Genre: Kathryn Bigelow will open on June 1 with The Loveless (1982) and the premiere of the 35mm preservation of Set-Up (1978), with Bigelow in attendance to introduce the film and participate in a post-screening Q&A. The exhibition is organized by Jenny He, Curatorial Assistant, Department of Film, The Museum of Modern Art.

Todd Almond: Wyoming and Parts of Kansas, is a travelogue-in-song event inspired by the songwriter's journey across the American plains. Upon hearing that the venerable Philadelphia Orchestra has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy after incurring a large deficit amid diminishing income, PETA sent a letter to Allison Vulgamore, president and CEO of the orchestra, with an offer that could help the orchestra and animals on factory farms at the same time: Display PETA's pro-vegan ad on the backs of musicians' music stands, and PETA will donate money to help save the orchestra. The ad, which features a photo of a cute pig and reads, 'A Vegan Diet Is Music to Animals' Ears. Go Vegan,' aims to encourage symphony attendees to think about who's on their plates-for the sake of animals as well as their own health.
