Rome around 1800. The city groaning under a regime of terror. The revolutionary-minded painter Mario Cavaradossi is charged in the Church of Sant'Andrea della Valle to create Maria Magdalena paintings one. From his captivity escaped Republican Angellotti family the Attavanti, has hidden in this church and now makes Mario to noticeable. This is called him a safe hiding place on his property. Hardly a friend fled Angellotti, the cruel police chief Scarpia enters the Church. In the approved open grave Chapel of the Attavanti, he finds the fan of the sister of Angelottis. Immediately is in the clear that where he had to have sought refuge in the Church. He knows of the friendship of Cavaradossis and Angelottis. In addition, he wants to win Cavaradossis lovers, the singer Floria Tosca, for themselves. He so irritating Toscas jealousy by showing her the fan, and it therefore suggests a ratio of the young Attavanti with Cavaradossi.
