In the works of Alessandro Scarlatti (1660 - 1725), the Italian music of the 17th and early 18th century, was another highlight. Coming from Palermo, he was music director from 1680 to 1684 the Swedish Queen Christina in Rome before he - after a stopover in Naples - 1703 Kapellmeister at Santa Maria Maggiore was. However, in Rome for the papal decree from 1698 opera and theater performances were prohibited, so musical and dramatic compositions could arise only disguised as an oratorio. With Il primo omicidio Scarlatti created a remarkable musical realization of Cain described in the Old Testament and Abel-substance with totally original use of each instrument. Unlike many oratorio texts, the libretto is not in Latin but in the language of opera - in Italian - written. One experiences the first murder in human history: Adam and Eve lament their fall, to whose account they were expelled from Paradise. Abel wants to comfort his parents, promising to sacrifice a lamb to God. But Cain calls for as firstborn the right to perform the sacrifice. Getting aggressive suicidal assault him. Finally Cain hears the voice of Lucifer, who encouraged him. On the field, slaying Cain Abel. God complains vehemently Cain, the first murderer repented. At the end of reported Abels voice of heavenly joys, and the voice of God promise salvation.
