Hall in the Palace of the Duke: with his court, the young, Bohemian Duke of Mantua commits a sumptuous feast. Just telling of a tempting adventure with an unknown Bürgermädchen to woo the beautiful wife of Count Ceprano shortly thereafter. The hunchbacked jester Rigoletto is long hated by her courtiers by his cynical mockery. Because they can have nothing on the minion of the Duke, they speculate on nasty revenge. They are his hidden life on the trail and plan the kidnapping of alleged lovers. Count Monterone appears and calls for accountability for the dishonor of his daughter of the Duke. When Rigoletto mocks the outraged father, the curse of the offended meets him.

The lonely end of a cul de sac: the thought of monterone's curse pursues Rigoletto. Sparafucile, a mercenary killer who offers his services to him.
