Carmen, a young and beautiful worker of the cigarette factory of Seville is overwhelms by all men. But it you liked to win the who cares not for them: Don José, a Sergeant of the military guard. Before Carmen returns to the factory, she throws to him a flower. But Don José is actually already taken: Micaëla, who visited the young soldier, reminds him of the wonderful time of their love. The girl takes a letter, some money and a kiss from his mother. Suddenly, shouting is heard from the factory. Carmen has wounded a companion in the dispute with the knife. José receives the command to bring the accused and to dissipate after the interrogation in prison by Lieutenant Zuniga. But quickly he succumbs to their different, allowing it to escape. Shortly afterwards, Carmen and the now downgraded Don José in the smugglers Inn at Lillas Pastia meet. When Don José failed to return for the hearing of Zapfenstreiches in the barracks, and he also resist the commands of occurring Zúñiga, his fate is sealed: he needs the smugglers join. But already after a short time, Carmen loses interest in Don José. She had brought her eyes to the Bullfighter Escamillo. This invites all smugglers to his next Bullfight. Micaëla, who has found out the whereabouts of Don Jose calls him back home, to the deathbed of his mother. This time Don José yields and follows Micaëla - but only to take farewell of his mother. In bullfighting Escamillos announced he is already lurking outside the entrance of the arena on Carmen. Once again he tried to retune to a common life, but she rejects him: as he stabs the woman he had loved about everything in his despair.
