William Hurt and Robyn Nevin lead an Australian and American cast in EuGene O'Neill's Long Day's Journey Into Night, a scorching portrait of a family haunted by shadows of the past and paralysed by the prospect of the future. Andrew Upton directs the co-production for Sydney Theatre Company and Artists Repertory Theatre, based in Portland, Oregon, where the show will tour following the Australian season. The production opens at Sydney Theatre On 3 July 2010.

Actor James Tyrone, his wife Mary and their two adult sons, Jamie and Edmund, have taken up residence for the summer at their holiday home in Connecticut. During the course of the ‘long day' of the play's title this family battles to unearth, and conceal, a series of appalling truths. Rarely staged in Australia but frequently considerEd O'Neill's masterpiece, Long Day's Journey Into Night, is a largely autobiographical work of gut-wrenching honesty.

William Hurt (James Tyrone) has appeared with Artists Repertory Theatre in Drawer Boy and Vanya. He played the role of Edmund in Oregon Shakespeare Festival's 1975 production of Long Day's Journey Into Night. Though his roots are on stage, Hurt is best known for his numerous film roles. He won the Academy Award for his role in Kiss of the Spider Woman and was also nominated for Children of a Lesser God, Broadcast News and A History of Violence. He recently released the much anticipated film, The Yellow Handkerchief. He has also been featured in Into the Wild and Vantage Point. Hurt can currently be seen in cinemas in Ridley Scott's Robin Hood.

Robyn Nevin (Mary Tyrone) is a former Artistic Director of Sydney Theatre Company. Her last performance with the Company, in The Women of Troy, earned her a Helpmann Award for Best Actress. Since then she has also performed to acclaim in Melbourne Theatre Company productions of August: Osage County and The Drowsy Chaperone.

Hurt's fellow Oregonian, Todd Van Voris, playing eldest son Jamie, is a resident company member at Artists Repertory Theatre and won Portland's Drammy Award for Best Lead Actor in Betrayal. Luke Mullins, a former member of the STC Actors Company and recipient of a Green Room Award for Best Supporting Actor for The Season at Sarsaparilla, appears as Edmund. Completing the cast as the maid Cathleen, is Emily Russell, also formerly of the STC Actors Company.

Andrew Upton has been Co Artistic Director of Sydney Theatre Company since 2008. His previous directing credits for the Company include Dissident, Goes Without Saying by Michel Vinaver, David Mamet's Reunion, Ruby Moon by Matt Cameron and part two of The Mysteries by Lally Katz and Hilary Bell. His most recent adaptation of Mikhail Bulgakov's The White Guard is currently at the National Theatre in London.

Founded in 1982, Artists Repertory Theatre is the oldest professional theatre company in Portland, Oregon, renowned for its productions of regional premieres, commissioned works, and selected classics. The company produces six to eight productions in two theatres, under the leadership of Producing Artistic Director Allen Nause. Consistent with Sydney Theatre Company, Artists Rep has a tradition of actively fostering relationships and collaborations with International Artists and companies.
