Enter a World of Magical Interactive Theatre Experiences at Arts Centre Melbourne This Summer

By:

Families will have the chance to participate in unique interactive arts experiences at Arts Centre Melbourne this summer. From 11 - 15 January the Inhabitors' In A Deep Dark Forest will take audiences on an exciting new adventure game set in a magical pop-up wonderland. Then from 19 - 22 January Canadian theatre company CORPUS' will introduce some colourful creatures to the Arts Centre Melbourne lawn in Les Moutons (The Sheep).

Acclaimed Melbourne theatre maker Roslyn Oades and collaborators' In A Deep Dark Forest is a remarkable live bedtime story with a twist. The State Theatre Rehearsal Room will be transformed into a magical pop-up forest where an exciting new adventure game, set in and played in the dark will come to life.

The story tells of a faraway place, not so dissimilar to our own, where an enchanted forest is in seriously, serious trouble. The ancient trees that once bathed in shafts of golden sunlight have been plunged into darkest shadow. The sun is missing and it is always night. The white horned butterfly, the spotted Thylacine and the penguin fairy, that once frolicked happily, have all disappeared. The story begins as a tribe of brave children (and their elders), armed with tiny torches, set forth into the darkness on a daring quest to return the light.

Reality meets fantasy in CORPUS' Les Moutons, a fun wordless live installation that recreates a rustic country scene in a urban setting. Members of the general public will be able to walk up the Arts Centre Melbourne lawn and watch four performers become a realistic flock of sheep undertaking their daily activities. They are Julie, Marie-Louise, Bernadette and César, three healthy ewes and a young ram. Members of the public will be able to watch their activities including shearing, feeding, milking and more. The innovative performance twists reality in surprising ways and takes audience interaction to new heights.

Founded in 1997 by Sylvie Bouchard and artistic director David Danzon, CORPUS is known for its surrealist humour that combines movement with theatrical imagery.

Roslyn Oades is a Melbourne-based theatre maker known for her pioneering work in the field of headphone verbatim and audio-cued performance. In 2013 she was invited to be Director-in-Residence at Malthouse Theatre. She created HELLO, GOODBYE & HAPPY BIRTHDAY for the Malthouse as part of the 2014 Melbourne Festival. The show won a Green Room Award for Best Writing/Adaptation for the Australian Stage and was also shortlisted for an AWGIE Award and the 2016 NSW Premiere's Literary Award.
