DEATH OF A SALESMAN: THE SITCOM to Play Northcote Town Hall, 17-28 September
By: Tyler Peterson
The great American tragedy gets a comedic re-write in Death of a Salesman: The Sitcom at Northcote Town Hall, Studio 1 from Wednesday 17 - Sunday 28 September, 2014. Set in a television studio, the audience will witness the hilarity both on-set and off during a 'live' taping of their soon-to-be favourite TV show "The Loman Empire".
Inspired by the 80s sitcoms such as Cheers and Perfect Strangers, Death of a Saleman: The Sitcom re-creates the sitcom audience experience - complete with television cameras filming all the 'on set' action. A show-within-a-show, audiences will be sucked in by the daily drama of Willy Loman and his 'on-screen' family and then witness the backstage antics with the 'actors' playing the family during the ad breaks.
Featuring an all-star Australian comedy cast, including Russell Fletcher, Danny McGinley, Lana Schwarcz and Jimmy James Eaton.
Written by Melbourne comedian Danny McGinlay, who has performed stand-up around Australia and is regularly seen on TV's The Project and The Footy Show - and even had one line in Steven Spielberg's The Pacific! Having studied the original play in high school and watched countless hours of television, McGinlay has adapted the play into a comedy with the help of director Damian Callinan, a fellow stand-up comedian, writer and broadcaster. Callinan is best known to audiences for his roles on TV's Skithouse, Before The Game and as a regular guest on Spicks n' Specks, as well as ABC 774 Melbourne.
Presented as part of Speakeasy's Melbourne Fringe Festival season, Northcote Town Hall will be transformed into a satellite Northside festival hub with a mini-season of 5 award-winning and Melbourne premiere productions. Presenting a cross-section of contemporary dance, side-splitting comedy and a rock n' roll concert like no other, Melbourne's Fringe Festival will come to life in this one-stop-shop for all art-lovers from Wednesday 17 September - Sunday 5 October, 2014.
