Photo Flash: First Look at Austin Playhouse's THE FOREIGNER, Opening 5/23

By:

Austin Playhouse is proud to present one of the funniest comedies ever written. Shy Englishman, Charlie Baker has a hard time speaking to strangers. To help him out, his gregarious friend "Froggy" LeSeur tells the residents of a rural fishing lodge that Charlie is a foreigner who doesn't understand English. Assuming their secrets are safe, chaos ensues when Charlie overhears dastardly plots involving the residents of Betty Meeks' lodge! Hailed as "a charming comedy about the magic of kindness" by Chicago Theater Beat, The Foreigner is chock full of hilarious slapstick and witty wordplay.

The Foreigner stars Austin Playhouse Acting Company members Stephen Mercantel (Ellard Simms), Jason Newman (Rev. David Marshall Lee), Lara Toner (Catherine Simms), David Stahl (Charlie Baker), Michael Stuart ("Froggy" LeSeur), and Cyndi Williams (Betty Meeks), with Lowell Bartholomee (Owen Musser).

Direction by Don Toner, lighting design by Don Day, and sound design by Joel Mercado-See.

Following its premiere in Milwaukee, the play opened on November 1, 1984 at New York City's Astor Place Theatre where it ran for 686 performances. The play eventually won two Obie Awards and two Outer Critics Circle Awards, including Best New American Play and Best Off-Broadway Production. Larry Shue died in a plane crash the following year. On November 7, 2004, a Roundabout Theatre Company revival opened for a ten-week run at the off-Broadway Laura Pels Theatre.

The Foreigner plays the Austin Playhouse, located inside the Highland Mall at 6001 Airport Blvd, Austin TX 78752, from May 23rd thru June 22nd. Performances are Thrusday - Saturday at 8pm and Sunday at 5pm. Tickets are $28 Thursday/Friday, $30 Saturday/Sunday, and $35 Opening night. Studend tickets are half-price. $3 discount for seniors 65 and up. For tickets and information, please visit www.austinplayhouse.com or call 512-476-0084.
