OUR TOWN, Thornton Wilder's Iconic American Play Comes to Austin in February

Coming in February, The City Theatre Company proudly presents the acclaimed stage classic Our Town, Thornton Wilder's great American play about family, community, and the value of life's most precious moments. Written in 1938, this moving portrait of small-town life won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and, with so much relevance, is still being produced in theatres today. It plays February 14 thru March 3 in an exciting original production at Picturebox Studios.

Described by Edward Albee as "...the greatest American play ever written," Our Town presents life, love, and loss in Grover's Corners, a small American town much like any other. Children grow. Couples marry. And loved ones pass. Yet, in this simple place, a profound story emerges. Ordinary people lead extraordinary lives, and the hopes and dreams of a community expand into questions about meaning and purpose. It is a poignant portrayal where the seemingly simplest of relationships and feelings provide the deepest echoes, and it reminds us to cherish all of life's most precious moments, no matter how small.

Thornton Wilder (1897-1975) was a novelist and playwright whose works celebrate the connection between the commonplace and the cosmic dimensions of human experience. He is the only writer to win Pulitzer Prizes for both drama and fiction: for his novel The Bridge of San Luis Rey, and two plays, Our Town and The Skin of Our Teeth. His other novels include The Woman of Andros, Heaven's My Destination, The Ides of March, and Theophilus North. His other major dramas include The Matchmaker (adapted as the musical Hello, Dolly!) and The Alcestiad. He enjoyed enormous success as a translator, adaptor, actor, librettist and lecturer/teacher and his many honors include the Gold Medal for Fiction from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. More information on Thornton Wilder and his family is available in Penelope Niven's definitive biography, Thornton Wilder: A Life (2013) as well as on the Wilder Family website, www.thorntonwilder.com

Our Town is directed by Artistic Director Andy Berkovsky, with assistant direction by Tracy Hurd, musical direction by Chuck Winkler, and costume design by Scout Gutzmerson. The production features the ensemble cast of Chuck Winkler, Eli Berke, Catherine Williams, Dave Westenbarger, Trish Morrison, Chris Gloyna, Valenica Lee, Jane Newchurch, Levi Gore, Sunshine Garrison, Max Crossland, Mike Dellens, and Chandlor Erickson.
