Varla Jean Merman Set for THE LOOSE CHANTEUSE, 2/17-27
Direct from filming her new feature film entitled Varla Jean & The Mushroomheads, Varla returns to New York for the first time in 3 years with this all new show. Miss Merman spices up the gig with the appearance of Tom Judson aka "Gus Mattox" on piano. New Orleans native Varla Jean Merman guest starred on Ugly Betty last spring and will be starring in Willard Beckham's new musical LUCKY GUY this spring opposite Leslie Jordan Off-Broadway at the Little Shubert (opens May 19th). She was featured on Bravo's Project Runway Season 5 as the winning model for the show's drag challenge. Varla was recently seen on Logo in One Night Stand-Up costarring Coco Peru and Jackie Beat. This past May she won the Boston Critics' Elliot Nor ton Award for Outstanding Music al Performance for her portrayal of Christine Daae in Phantom of the OPRAH.
Varla's alter ego Jeffery Roberson played the role of Mary Sunshine in the revival of Chicago on Broadway and also made his network television debut on All My Ch ildren in the recurring role of lady of the evening Rosemary Chicken. Jeffery shared the Outfest Film Festival "Best Actor" Award and the Aspen HBO Film Festival "Best Actress" Award with his costars Jack Plotnick and Clinton Leupp for his featured performance in the cult classic film Girls Will Be Girls (Sundance 2003) directed by Richard Day. Jeffery will begin filming the sequel to Girls Will Be Girls next month. He also appeared at the Long Wharf Theatre in Hartford Stage's production of The Mystery of Irma Vep directed by Michael Wilson performing the roles originally made famous by Charles Ludlam.
