UPDATE: SPRING AWAKENING Revival Officially Headed to NYC; Casting Notice Posted!

Just last month, BroadwayWorld brought you news that Spring Awakening might be heading back to New York. And now an Equity casting notice has confirmed that Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater's musical is officially headed to NYC, but no word yet on whether the show will end up on Broadway.

According to Deadline, the show's lead producer, Ken Davenport, is waiting for a theater to open up.

The revival will be a co-production of Deaf West Theatre and Forest Of Arden, whose founder, Michael Arden will serve as director. Choreography will be by HEDWIG's Spencer Liff. The production was first presented in L.A. at Inner-City Arts' Rosenthal Theater and recently ended its run at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills.

With music by Duncan Sheik and a book and lyrics by Steven Sater, SPRING AWAKENING is based on the German play Spring Awakening (1891) by Frank Wedekind. Set in late-19th century Germany, the musical tells the story of teenagers discovering the inner and outer tumult of teenage sexuality. In the musical, alternative rock is employed as part of the folk-infused rock score.

Following its conception in the late 1990s and various workshops, concerts, rewrites and its Off-Broadway debut, the original Broadway production of Spring Awakening opened at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre on December 10, 2006. Its cast

Highlights from the show

included Jonathan Groff, Lea Michele, Skylar Astin and John Gallagher, Jr. while its creative team comprised director Michael Mayerand choreographer Bill T. Jones. The original Broadway production won 8 Tony Awards, including Tonys for Best Musical, Direction, Book, Score and Featured Actor. The production also earned 4 Drama Desk Awards and its original cast album received a Grammy Award.

The success of the Broadway production has spawned several other productions worldwide, including various US productions, a short West End production that won 4 Laurence Olivier Awards including Best Musical, and a series of international productions.

MELCHIOR (HEARING ACTOR)
Male, to play 15 - 20 years old, any ethnicity. A smart, headstrong boy who refuses to bow down to society's rules. An atheist and radical student. Struggles with his intense feelings for Wendla and his awakening sexual urges. Must be very proficient in American Sign Language (ASL). Excellent singer and actor. Range: G2 - B4.

WENDLA (DEAF ACTOR)
Female, to play 15 - 20 years old, any ethnicity. Innocent. With every passing day, she grows more curious about the world around her and her changing body. Both vulnerable and a willing participant in her evolution. Explores her newfound sexuality with Melchior. Must be fluent in ASL. Excellent and musical actor.

VOICE OF WENDLA (HEARING ACTOR)
Female, to play 15 - 20 years old, any ethnicity. See above description. Must play electric guitar, acoustic guitar, and piano. Excellent singer and actor. Range: E3 - E5.

MORITZ (DEAF ACTOR)
Male, to play 15 - 20 years old, any ethnicity. Melchior's best friend, a troubled student. He desperately tries to please his father but always seems to disappoint him. His haunting sexual dreams and academic failures eventually drive him to suicidal thoughts. Must be fluent in ASL. Excellent and musical actor.

VOICE OF MORITZ (HEARING ACTOR)
Male, to play 15 - 20 years old, any ethnicity. See above description. Must play electric guitar and acoustic guitar. Excellent singer and actor. Range: C3 - A4.

ILSE (HEARING ACTOR)
Female, to play 15 - 20 years old, any ethnicity. Childhood friend of Melchior, Moritz, and Wendla who was abused and has run away from home to live in an artists' colony. She reaches out to her old friend Moritz in the last moments of his life. Will be required to learn ASL. Interesting and excellent folk singer and actor. Excellent singer and actor. Unique and in a different world than the rest of the youth. Range: E3 - E5.

ADULT MEN (DEAF ACTOR)
Male, 40s - 50s, any ethnicity. Excellent actor who plays a variety of rigid adult roles including HEADMASTER KNOCHENBRUCH; HERR STEIFEL, Moritz's father; FATHER KAULBACH; and others. Must be an intimidating presence. Must be fluent in ASL.

ADULT MEN (HEARING ACTOR)
Male, to play 40s - 50s, any ethnicity. Excellent actor who plays a variety of roles including: HERR SONNENSTITCH, the boys' teacher, HERR NEUMANN, Ilse's father; HERR RILOW, Hanschen's father; FATHER KAULBACH; DOCTOR VON BRAUSEPULVER; HERR GABOR, Melchior's father; and others. Must be an intimidating presence. Also voices for ADULT DEAF MEN. Will be required to learn some ASL. Non-singing

Female, to play 36 - 50, any ethnicity. Excellent actor who plays a variety of rigid adult roles including: FRAU BERGMAN, Wendla's mother; FRAULEIN KNUPPELDICK; and FRAULEIN GROSSEBUSTENHALTER. Also voices for ADULT DEAF WOMEN. Will be required to learn some ASL. Non-singing.
