UCB Theatre Spotlights South Asian Comedians 11/15 At UCB Hell's Kitchen The Upright Citizens Brigade ("UCB") has a long history of developing some of the country's most famous comedians. Amy Poehler, Donald Glover, and Nick Kroll are just a few of the stars the UCB can claim as alumni. On Thursday, November 15th, the legendary comedy school will open its stage to what it hopes to be the next wave of comedic talent, and it's placing a large bet on a group that few have before: South Asian comics.

The show, entitled "Crazy Funny South Asians," promises to feature a variety of comedy forms, from live sketches to stand up comedy, and will be written and performed exclusively by comedians of South Asian descent. Many of the comics already have notable credits under their belts (Netflix, FX, MTV, Comedy Central), but just because the talented cast have South Asian roots, don't expect humor only those from the subcontinent can understand. As the UCB writes in its show description, "Like the shirt you're wearing, this showcase is made by brown people but meant for anyone."

Earlier this year, the show's namesake (Crazy Rich Asians) revealed how a historically underrepresented minority can create a movie whose quality and demand are as high as those that have preceded it. With its singular players and the vaunted UCB stage as its platform, "Crazy Funny South Asians" seeks to do the same for a comedy show. Will it succeed? It's a live show, so the only way to truly know is to go see for your self.
