The world premiere of a new musical called Tony & The Soprano--which has much more to do with opera than the HBO gangland hit--will be presented at the Kitchen Theatre Company from January 12th through February 11th as part of the Ithaca, NY theatre's 15th anniversary season.

KTC's artistic director Rachel Lampert (the Gilbert and Sullivan homage Precious Nonsense) will helm the piece at the 73-seat theatre. "Tony's life is one dead end after another. He's 35 and still living in his mother's Brooklyn brownstone. But when the attic apartment is rented to a Julliard music student, his life begins to change. Opera wafting down from the top floor starts everyone singing their own lyrics to the classic melodies of Verdi, Mozart, Rossini and more," according to production notes.

Tony & The Soprano will be performed as a Main Stage piece; Kitchen Counter Culture (with works by performer-writers), Kitchen Sink (aimed at the community) and Family Fare are the other series that the theatre offers. A number of other works will be seen on the Main Stage for the 2005-2006 season: Arthur Miller's The Price (beginning August 25th), Lee Blessing's Two Rooms (beginning October 27th), David Sedaris' The SantaLand Diaries with Karl Gregory (starting December 1st), Edward Albee's Three Tall Women (beginning March 16th, 2006), and playwright-performer Kathryn Blume's The Accidental Activist (starting April 20th, 2006) as well as a world premiere musical (starting January 6th, 2006) that has not yet been announced.

Eight other shows--Black Stuff, The Odyssey, an epic musical, Winter Tales, a seasonal musical, I Have a Song to Sing O!, My Life in the Trenches, Wonder Woman the Musical, The Parrot and Labor--will also round out the KTC season; they will be featured within the other performance series.

Kitchen Theatre Company is located in the historic Clinton House, a renovated hotel in Downtown Ithaca. Visit www.kitchentheatre.org for more information about the theatre, about Tony & The Soprano and about its other upcoming shows.
