Since the beginning of time (and way before emojis!), humans have had the ability to express love without using verbal skills. This weekend, July 16th and 17th, Pepsi is hosting an interactive pop up exhibit displaying all of the ways we have silently communicated our love, entitled "Love: From Cave to Keyboard". It used to be drawings of hearts on the side of a cave, then later people used Morse Code and flag semaphore , and now we have hundreds (if not thousands) of emojis.

This pop-up presentation covers every form of emotional communication including smoke signals, photography, music, illustrations, silent film, and sign language.

Recently in the revival of SPRING AWAKENING, the presentation features Deaf West actors Miles Barbee, Daniel Durant, Treshelle Edmond, and Amelia Hensley expressing the beauty of new love in American Sign Language. In pairs, the couples tell the story of a first date for two people that met online. The couples go through waves of casual, awkward, excited, and so many more emotions that are associated with a first date. They discuss topics such as family life, favorite colors, constellations and lifestyle habits. Although, if you are not familiar with American Sign Language, it might be difficult to catch all that. However, you still can feel the emotions being expressed back and forth through the scene. For example, the first touch shared between the two. Knowing the sign for "touch" is not necessary to understand how the two react to the situation.

The Deaf West actors express their story in a language known to some, and foreign to many more. But, the feelings of a first date are mutual enough to understand their story without necessarily understanding the language.

In attendance at the exhibit's preview were actor and model Kellen Lutz, Broadway star Andrew Rannells, and actress Maggie Gyllenhaal. The exhibit is open to the public this weekend to celebrate World Emoji Day! The event runs from 10A.M.- 6P.M., Saturday and Sunday. The display is located in downtown Manhattan, at 433 Broadway.
