This Week at Birdland: the James Carter Organ Trio, Aubrey Logan and More

Birdland will kick-off their great week of programming with the following acts:

April 7-8 (Sunday at 7:30PM and Monday at 8:30PM)

The Jive Aces at the Birdland Theater

Renowned worldwide for their high-energy spectacular showmanship, their viral video "Bring Me Sunshine" and for being the first live band to reach the final rounds of "Britain's Got Talent", The Jive Aces have firmly established themselves the UK's No.1 Jive & Swing band. The in-demand sextet average 300 shows a year and have worked with Van Morrison, Keely Smith and performed for HM the Queen. They headlined and sold-out the Royal Albert Hall and thousands of festivals, theatres, dance halls, etc, in 35 countries, including Buckingham Palace for the Coronation Festival, Trafalgar Square for the Olympics and major theatre tours in the USA. Their performance at the 2015 Glastonbury Festival was listed by the "Daily Telegraph" as one of the festival's highlights.

Anne Runolfsson and Robin Skye "Magnificent Chaos"

"Magnificent Chaos" celebrates the 30-year friendship between Anne Runolfsson and Robin Skye. They first met in rehearsal for Les Miserables at The Shubert in LA and found a friendship that has celebrated and mourned all that life has thrown their way. Under the musical direction of Natalie Tenenbaum, "Magnificent Chaos" employs a 6-piece band and back-up singers. With songs by Peter Gabriel, Annie Lennox, Foreigner, Jason Mraz, Bryan Adams, Kate Bush, Imagine Dragons, Carrie Underwood and others, "Magnificent Chaos" dives deep into the darkness and the light in the messy thing called life.

Jim Caruso's Cast Party

Jim Caruso's Cast Party is a wildly popular weekly soiree that brings a sprinkling of Broadway glitz and urbane wit to the legendary Birdland in New York City every Monday night. It's a cool cabaret night-out enlivened by a hilariously impromptu variety show. Showbiz superstars, backed by Steve Doyle on bass, Billy Stritch on piano and Daniel Glass on drums, hit the stage alongside up-and-comers, serving up jaw-dropping music and general razzle-dazzle.

All tickets $30, $10 food/drink minimum

April 9 (Tuesday) at 7:00PM

Ashley Pezzotti at the Birdland Theater

Capturing the heart of audiences with her extensive repertoire in traditional jazz and bebop, Ashley creates an atmosphere of excitement that will transport you to another place and time. Her style is reminiscent of the great Anita O'Day and June Christy, and she performs with a level of maturity that is far beyond her years. Ashley's debut album "We've Only Just Begun" is set to release on March 29th, 2019. Ashley's straight-ahead jazz release features an array of original compositions inspired by the Great American Songbook. With Alex Weitz (Tenor Saxophone), Steven Feifke (Piano), Bob Bruya (Bass) and Bryan Carter (Drums).

James Carter Organ Trio

By the time Detroit native saxophonist James Carter emerged on the New York jazz scene 1988 he was already a sensation. Now, Carter the mature artist is firmly established as one of the leading saxophonists of his generation, well versed in everything from straight ahead to gypsy-jazz to funk. With James Carter (Saxophones), Gerard GIbbs (Hammond B3 Organ) and Alex White (Drums).

April 9 (Tuesday) at 9:30PM

The Lineup with Susie Mosher at the Birdland Theater

The Lineup with Susie Mosher is a wild, anything-goes variety show featuring entertainers from the Broadway, cabaret and comedy scenes. Actress/singer Mosher hosts the spontaneous extravaganza at 9:30pm on the first and third Tuesday of every month.

April 10 (Wednesday) at 5:30PM

David Ostwald's Louis Armstrong Eternity Band

Inspired by the noble jazz pioneers Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton and their colleagues, David Ostwald's Louis Armstrong Eternity Band breathes life and passion into America's own great art form. Now in its 17th year of residency at Birdland, the weekly post-workday engagement is the city's best musical bargain! Tuba player David Ostwald leads a rotating lineup that features talents such as clarinetist Anat Cohen, trombonist/vocalist Wycliffe Gordon, pianist Ehud Asherie, drummer Marion Felder and more!

Aubrey Logan at the Birdland Theater

Aubrey Logan's concerts are a mix of excellent musicality, jaw-dropping vocals, expert trombone-playing, a breathtaking array of originals and original takes on cover songs and, well...fun! Her heart wrenching musical stories has audiences in tears just before her comedic relief has them in stiches. Very few artists can concentrate so fully on the music and yet be so connected to the people who have come to hear her. And that connection is magic.

April 11 (Thursday) at 5:30PM

Koh Mr. Saxman and John di Martino Duo

Koh became a professional musician at 15 years old. He then released his solo album called "Mr. Saxman" in 2002. In 2010, Koh was with a new company label called "Chillin' Groove Records" (CGR) to record his 6th studio

album "Happy Moment." He once again appointed himself as the director role and his purpose is to

to release chilling music to his target audiences. John di Martino is a jazz pianist, arranger and producer,

based in New York City.

April 12 (Friday) at 5:30PM

The Birdland Big Band

Founded by drummer and musical director Tommy Igoe, the Birdland Big Band features the finest musicians in New York! Celebrating 10 years at the club, the BBB roars into action every Friday, playing the finest Jazz, Latin and Brazilian music from the world's best arrangers. After work or before a show, drinks or a great dinner, come hear one of the world's best drummers driving the hardest swinging band in New York. Eric Comstock

Singer/pianist Eric Comstock has been called "a song's best friend," and the jazz and pop songbooks are in great hands when he is onstage at Birdland. Whether the song is by Rodgers and Hart or Ellington and Strayhorn, Paul Simon or Bob Dylan, you'll hear the lyric as if for the first time. Joining Eric will be eminent bassist/composer Sean Smith -- in all, a perfect winter Saturday supper!

April 14 (Sunday) at 6:00PM

Alon Yavnai Quartet

In 1996, Three years after arriving in the United States, Alon won the first price at the Great American Jazz Piano Competition. After several years living in Boston, where Alon recorded two albums as a leader he moved to New York and toured worldwide with Paquito D'rivera and his Quintet & Jazz Chamber Trio for the next few years. Alon has released several albums as a leader; Among them his big band album featuring the renowned NDR Bigband, for whom he has composed, arranged and recorded over the last decade. Alon's current and ongoing project is ALON & JOCA, his duo collaboration with Singer-songwriter/percussionist Joca Perpignan. In addition to touring worldwide, the duo has just released their new album on Chant Records, featuring the NDR Bigband. With Rafi Malkiel (Trombone), Peter Slavov (Bass) and Francisco Mela (Drums).

New York: Big City Songbook at the Birdland Theater

Birdland Theater is proud to announce that "New York: Big City Songbook," will return to the stage on Sundays, April 14, May 12, June 23, July 14, and August 11. The show stars Birdland favorites Klea Blackhurst, LaTanya Hall, Nicolas King and Jay Leonhart. Why have so many songwriters been compelled to write about New York? What is it about this city that fuels an endless supply of stories? This show offers a kaleidoscopic vision of life in the city, from the inspiring and romantic to the aggravating and the quirky. Created, scripted and hosted by Deborah Grace Winer.

The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra

Grammy Award winning pianist, composer and educator Arturo O'Farrill -- leader of the "first family of Afro-Cuban Jazz" (NY Times) -- was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. Son of the late, great composer Chico O'Farrill, Arturo was Educated at Manhattan School of Music, Brooklyn College Conservatory and the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. He played piano in Carla Bley's Big Band from 1979 through 1983 and earned a reputation as a soloist in groups led by Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Turre, Freddy Cole, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis and Harry Belafonte.
