The New School Announces Launch of Music Festival in Partnership with John Zorn
Richard Kessler and John Zorn announced today the inauguration of a new music festival to be held at The New School's Tishman Auditorium. StoneFest will present and celebrate experimental, improvisatory, and avant-garde artists from across the stylistic spectrum. Continuing the great tradition of The Stone, the festival will focus on creating a platform for groundbreaking artists who are challenging traditional notions of genre, style, and the role of the artist in advancing culture today. The festival will be coming to The New School's Tishman Auditorium (63 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY) on December 17, 18, and 19.
Each evening of the three-night festival is curated to include performances from four separate but increasingly blended genres: jazz, classical, rock, and improv. In total, the inaugural StoneFest will present 12 different sets over three consecutive nights - with 33 musicians in total taking the stage. Highlights include sets by Craig Taborn, JACK Quartet, Jay Campbell, and a rare performance of COBRA featuring John Zorn as prompter.
StoneFest precedes the upcoming completion of the relocation of The Stone, the landmark non-profit performance space founded by John Zorn and dedicated to the experimental and avant-garde, to The New School's Glassbox Theater. As first announced by The New York Times, The Stone at the New School will offer concerts five nights a week at The New School's Glassbox Theater beginning on February 28, 2018. Currently, The Stone is operating in the Glassbox Theater two nights per week as it sunsets its previous location on Avenue C and 2nd Street.
Stonefest is a perfect way to bring attention to The Stone relocating full-time to The New School this February. It's hard to imagine anyone other than John Zorn bringing together all of these artists into a three-day festival that surfs so many styles and genres. Fasten your seatbelts!
