The Catskill Sonata, Helmed by Mazursky, Extends L.A. Run

The Catskill Sonata, directed by Paul Mazursky, garnering critical acclaim upon its March 9 debut, will now have its April 14 run extended through April 29, it was announced today by The Hayworth Theater.  In addition, a weekly, Sunday Matinee performance is being added commencing April 1.

The production debuted March 9th.  "It is the late 1950's, June: another pre-season at Rosen's Resort in the Catskills.  Set apart from larger and lavish Catskills hotels, Rosen's caters to left-leaning writers, musicians and artists of the day.  For twenty years, Annie Rosen has attracted a bohemian group of guests who argue politics, listen to music, ramble in nature, and sometimes, fall in love. But this year is different.  The blacklist looms and many of Anne's friends are losing their jobs. Changing times are luring travelers abroad. Most likely, this will be Annie's last year. 'Europe on $5 a day, how can I compete with that,' Annie asks," state press materials.

Written by Michael Elias (The Jerk, The Frisco Kid, "Head of the Class") The Catskill Sonata is "a funny and poignant story of activism, desire, and loss.  Dave Vaughn, a brilliantly failed writer, holds forth on the patio, hiding from his losses past and present.  In between attempts to bed any available woman, Dave dispenses advice about everything -- especially sex and writing -- to young Irwin, a local boy working as a bellhop for the summer."

Paul Mazursky's career spans the last four decades including such films as Bob, Carol, Ted & Alice, Down and Out in Beverly Hills, An Unmarried Woman, Blume in Love, The Tempest and Moscow on the Hudson.  He has received multiple Oscar nominations as both a writer and director and has also appeared as an actor in over one hundred movie and television roles, including, most recently, playing Norm on HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm."

The play runs: Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings at 8PM.  Visit www.thehayworth.com for more information.
