Teatru Manoel Brings PREMIERES to Malta Today

PREMIERES is coming to Teatru Manoel in Malta on February 2nd, 2019.

The Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and Teatru Manoel present a night of Maltese and American music, featuring the premieres of two works commissioned especially for the occasion.

Under the direction of Miran Vaupoti?, the MPO opens with the famous overture to Bernstein's operetta Candide, possibly the most popular orchestral work by an American composer.

The orchestra's own piccolo player Fiorella Camilleri then takes on a solo role for a performance of Joseph Vella's Piccolo Concerto.

The premieres of two new works make up the second half of the concert, starting with Christopher Muscat's work, the Bahr el-Mawt Symphony. The work, whose name translates to "sea of death," is inspired by the many tragic deaths of would-be asylum seekers in their attempt to reach safety by crossing the Mediterranean.

In writing Harmonies of Opposites, the American composer Greg Brown draws inspiration from the prints of Victor Pasmore, the British architect and artist who was instrumental in the development of abstract art in Britain and who made Malta his home.

Programme

Leonard Bernstein - Overture to Candide

Joseph Vella - Concerto for Piccolo, Strings and Timpani, Op. 114

Christopher Muscat - Bahr al-Mawt Symphony

Gregory W. Brown - Harmonies of Opposites
