Surfside Players Announces Auditions for CITY OF ANGELS 1/30-31

By:

Relive the romance and intrigue of film noir, and the glitz and glamour of the Golden Age of Hollywood. Surfside Players, Cocoa Beach, is proud to announce open auditions for its spring musical, CITY OF ANGELS, Winner of the 1990 Tony Award for Best Musical. Music by Cy Coleman (Sweet Charity), lyrics by David Zippel (The Goodbye Girl), and book by Larry Gelbart (M*A*S*H).

In a black-and-white world of shadows and streetlights, hardboiled detective Stone is approached by a wealthy socialite begging him to track down the men who kidnapped her stepdaughter. In the course of his investigation, he is beaten up by thugs and framed for murder, and his past returns to haunt him. This is the grim tale that mystery novelist Stine is adapting into a screenplay in the late 1940s, but egotistical producer-director Buddy Fidler constantly demands rewrites. The stress overwhelms Stine and causes him to seek comfort in an extramarital affair, and as the rewrites destroy the integrity of his work, Stone steps out of the "reel" world to confront Stine.

Actors in City of Angels portray both characters in the mystery story and shining Hollywood celebrities. The grittiness of Raymond Chandler-esque detective fiction and film noir is shown in a setting on stage done in black and white, while swinging jazz numbers and heartbreaking love songs form a tribute to the Big Band era.

Auditions for City of Angels are at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 30 and Monday, January 31, 2011. We are looking for at least 6 adult women and 10 adult men of varying ages. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes. No experience necessary and no resume required. Auditions will include cold readings from the script and singing excerpts from the musical score. CAUTION: This show contains sexual situations and occasional strong language.

Performance dates for City of Angels are March 25 - April 10, 2011 (three weekends), Fridays and Saturdays 8:00 p.m. and Sundays 2:00 p.m. Directed by Michael Thompson.
