Student Blog: Future Planning

I have always had a fond love for theater and always had a strong passion for writing, getting the opportunity to go to Wagner, I knew there was nothing more that I wanted to study than playwriting. Once I go to Wagner I made what I thought to be a foolproof plan to pursue theater studies, I even have a list of internships to apply to my senior year! Despite this I knew I wanted to keep my options open and see if I could minor in a subject like English, hoping it might provide some job security in the future. If you haven't noticed yet, planning for the future is very important for me, with college it has been a bit of a ride as my ideas and plans seem to change with the seasons.

As I mentioned, I walked onto campus living and breathing for theater studies... and then I changed my mind (you'll find that this happened often during my first semester). My whirlwind journey looking into other majors began with the encouragement of my art professor. I've never considered myself remotely good at art however, she was very enthusiastic about my art and even more enthusiastic about me pursuing an art minor! I mean what a compliment! I'm very happy that she encouraged me to explore things outside of the fixed plan I set for myself. As I began to get to know more people in different majors I began to think about minors and maybe even double majoring. I really took an interest in art administration, however, it's not available as a minor. So I decided to have a go at double majoring in it. Nothing is official yet but I'm taking a few classes such as intro to arts management and microeconomics to get a better insight and truly see if I want to double major. What's great about it is that it works well with theater studies so I've already knocked out a few classes. While I did have in mind that I wanted to look for another major, I never thought it would be something business related, truly a surprise!

And then... I changed my mind again...

Because of the BroadwayWorld Student Bloggers program, I began to think about pursuing something in journalism possibly as a minor. It was related to writing and I figured I could cover stories related to theater. However, I hit a bump in the road that I think is relatable to many people in college who question what they want to do. I'm a first-generation student, so these confusions can hit really hard especially when you're walking on an unpaved road. However, I found consolation whenever I heard my teachers encourage us to look into other majors. By exploring these new majors I learned a lot about what Wagner has to offer and I learned to accept change as part of my future plans.
