Stella McCartney Launches on Barneys.com
There are many reasons why Barneys is thrilled to be carrying Stella McCartney online for the first time-among them, this cape, these pants, and this bag. But the icing on this wildly chic cake? McCartney's dedication to earth-friendly and animal-friendly fashion.
"My first job is to be a fashion designer," McCartney told The Window. "My first job is to make desirable, luxurious, beautiful clothing and accessories that women want to buy. But I will always take the opportunity to use a beautiful organic fabric if I can or be responsible in my choices in some way."
The Autumn collection offers eco denim that is 98% organic, with no sandblasting used. Eco jersey is 100% organic cotton. And Stella's team developed a brand-new faux nappa for the season, which uses vegetable oil, a renewable natural resource, in its coating rather than petroleum. (We're partial to the tortoise shell heel loafers that use that clever new material.)
"My first decision has always been based on: Can I do this in a more sustainable way without sacrificing design? If I can, then there is no reason not to," she said.
"I grew up this way, so it's always been natural to me," McCartney said. "I think it is a mind-set; everyone can do really simple things to make a difference and every little bit counts, but there is still a long way to go."
