New Jersey theatre critic Simon Saltzman has been named the Outer Critics Circle's new president. The OCC is an organization of writers covering New York theatre for out-of-town newspapers, national publications, and other media beyond Broadway.
Saltzman served last season as Acting President, and was recently voted unanimously by the organization's executive board to the position of President. He is a long-time member of the OCC Executive Committee, and writes for several online publications in addition to
U.S. 1 Newspaper in Princeton and the Bergen News Group's
Commuter Week.
The Outer Critics Circle Awards are presented near the end of May every year at the famous Sardi's restaurant on 44th Street. The awards honor the best in both Broadway and Off-Broadway theatre for the previous season.
At last year's awards,
The History Boys won Best Broadway Play and
Jersey Boys won Best Broadway Musical.
Stuff Happens nabbed the Best Off-Broadway Play award, while the Best Off-Broadway Musical award went to
Grey Gardens.
Awake and Sing! and
Sweeney Todd also took home awards in the Best Revival categories.
