Robards Joins Cast of MTC Absurd Person Singular

Sam Robards has been announced as one of the stars of Manhattan Theatre Club's production of Absurd Person Singular. He joins the previously-announced cast of Mireille Enos (Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?), Clea Lewis (Fuddy Meers), Alan Ruck (The Producers), Deborah Rush (Noises Off) and Paxton Whitehead (My Fair Lady, Lettice and Lovage) in the show, which will open on Tuesday, October 18th at the Biltmore Theatre (261 West 47th Street) after beginning previews on Thursday, September 22nd.

Directed by John Tillinger (Judgement at Nuremberg, Night Must Fall), the show centers on "
three couples, three kitchens, three successive Christmas Eves: welcome to the world of Alan Ayckbourn's comedy about social class and splendid cocktails," state the show's production notes. The show marks the sixth Ayckbourn play Manhattan Theatre Club has produced; the almost 20-year relationship began with the 1988 production of Woman in Mind. Subsequent productions include: Absent Friends (1991), A Small Family Business (1992), Comic Potential (2000) and the interwoven plays House and Garden (2002). Director Tillinger previously helmed MTC's productions of House and Garden and Comic Potential.

Absurd Person Singular's creative team comprises includes John Lee Beatty (sets), Jane Greenwood (costumes), Brian MacDevitt (lighting), and Bruce Ellman (sound).

Robards, who will play Geoffrey in the show,
made his Broadway debut as Gustav Eberson in Roundabout's revival of Arthur Miller's The Man Who Had All The Luck (for which he received a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Play). His Off-Broadway credits include: Album (at the Cherry Lane); Moon Children, and Flux (Second Stage). On film, he has appeared in Life as a House, American Beauty, Bounce, Beautiful Girls; Mrs. Parker & the Vicious Circle, Pret a Porter; Bright Lights, Big City, Not Quite Paradise and Tempest. TV credits include the recurring role of Greg Brock on "The West Wing," "Law & Order: CI," and "Spin City."  He is the son of Jason Robards Jr. and Lauren Bacall.
