An actor playing a dying Sigmund Freud was sent to the hospital after he collapsed on stage in New York City.

According to an article from USA Today, the incident occurred at Saturday's matinee performance of FREUD'S LAST SESSION.

The play envisions a meeting between Freud and "Chronicles of Narnia" author C.S. Lewis soon before Freud's death.

Actor Martin Rayner was playing Freud when he rose from an armchair and fell to his knees. Mark Dold, the actor who plays Lewis, asked if a doctor was in the house.

A doctor then went on stage and sat with Rayner, according to stage manager Kate J. Cudworth, before Rayner was taken to St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center. Cudworth reported that he was awake and alert. The cause of the collapse was dehydration.

An understudy went on as Freud at the Saturday evening performance. Martin Rayner was fine on Sunday and he returned to play the final performance of "Freud's Last Session."
