The Whitman Project is celebrating the 188th birthday of Walt Whitman with a reading of his poetry and prose at Theater Ten Ten, 1010 Park Avenue between E. 84th and E. 85th Streets in Manhattan. Whitman Project regular readers Greg Trupiano, Lon Black, Hakim A. Williams, and Yvette Vanterpool will appear with Whitman scholars Karen Karbiener (New York University, Columbia University) and Ian Maloney (St. Francis College), alongside performers from Theater Ten Ten, Hudson Guild Theater Company, Brooklyn's Brave New World Repertory Theatre, readers from the Brooklyn-based Hope Project, and Mezzo-soprano Nicole Mitchell, who will serve as the evening's vocalist.

Featured readings include poems from Leaves of Grass, prose from Specimen Days, and newspaper articles from The Sun, The Aurora, and Brooklyn Daily Eagle. The evening will also include an open podium time for selected audience members to read their favorite brief Whitman selections.

The celebration will take place Thursday, May 31, 2007 at 7:00 PM, with doors opening at 6:30PM. Suggested admission is $10, cash only at the door, and includes reception and birthday cake. Reservations can be made by calling 212-288-3246 x. 3. For more information, visit www.theatertenten.com.
