Photo Flash: Play Along's Hairspray Fashion Dolls

This summer, Play Along will release a series of dolls representing characters from the upcoming New Line Cinema feature film version of the Broadway smash Hairspray.

Hairspray combines a stellar cast and award-winning music with an inspiring message of acceptance for people of all ages," said David Gold, VP of Marketing, Play Along. "We're thrilled to bring these characters to life for both long-time fans of the franchise and a new audience for this great story."  

Hitting retails shelves in July 2007 to coincide with the theatrical release, the Hairspray dolls offer authentic replicas of the central characters in the movie, including Edna Turnblad (played by John Travolta), Tracy Turnblad (played by newcomer Nikki Blonsky), Penny Pingleton (played by Amanda Bynes) and Link Larkin (played by Zac Efron from Disney's "High School Musical"). Wearing their signature fashions from key scenes in the film, the detailed dolls stand between 10 1/2 and 12 inches tall. Bringing extra excitement to the line are the singing dolls, which will play signature songs from the movie's soundtrack. The retail prices are $14.99 - $24.99.

Featuring new and original material based on John Waters' 1988 cult classic about star-struck teenagers on a local Baltimore dance show, the comedy features a remarkable collection of talent including John Travolta, Queen Latifah, Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken, Amanda Bynes, Allison Janney, Brittany Snow, Zac Efron, Elijah Kelley, producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron (Chicago), and director Adam Shankman (Bringing Down The House). The new screenplay for Hairspray was written by Leslie Dixon, based on the show's book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan, with a score by Marc Shaiman and Scott WittmanHairspray is scheduled for a July 20, 2007 release.
