Acclaimed film director Paul Mazursky, whose career spans the last four decades, having directed such films as Bob, Carol, Ted & Alice, Down and Out in Beverly Hills, Harry and Tonto, and An Unmarried Woman, is the director of a new play, The Catskill Sonata, which debuted March 9th at The Hayworth Theatre.  It plays through Saturday, April 14, 2007.

"It is the late 1950's, June: another pre-season at Rosen's Resort in the Catskills.  Set apart from larger and lavish Catskills hotels, Rosen's caters to left-leaning writers, musicians and artists of the day.  For twenty years, Annie Rosen has attracted a bohemian group of guests who argue politics, listen to music, ramble in nature, and sometimes, fall in love. But this year is different.  The blacklist looms and many of Anne's friends are losing their jobs. Changing times are luring travelers abroad. Most likely, this will be Annie's last year. 'Europe on $5 a day, how can I compete with that,' Annie asks," state press materials.

Written by Michael Elias (The Jerk, The Frisco Kid, "Head of the Class") The Catskill Sonata is "a funny and poignant story of activism, desire, and loss.  Dave Vaughn, a brilliantly failed writer, holds forth on the patio, hiding from his losses past and present.  In between attempts to bed any available woman, Dave dispenses advice about everything -- especially sex and writing -- to young Irwin, a local boy working as a bellhop for the summer."
