Opus Nine Chamber Ensemble Plays The New York Society Library 4/29

By:

The talented young musicians of Opus Nine Ensemble will present nineteenth- and twentieth-century European classical selections in the handsome wood-paneled Members' Room of The New York Society Library.

The event will take place on Thursday, April 29, at 7:00 p.m. at The New York Society Library.

The New York Society Library is located at 53 East 79th Street (just east of Madison Avenue; 6 train to 77th Street).

Ticket information is available at www.nysoclib.org/notes/2010/opus_nine.html. Library nonmembers and members are welcome; nonmembers should register by phone at 212-288-6900 x230. There is a $20/person fee with advance registration, $25 at the door.

The Library's current exhibition, Literary Lives, traces the careers of the extraordinary writers Francis Steegmuller (1906-1994) and his wife Shirley Hazzard. This event continues the celebration of the Steegmullers' world with an evening of European chamber music from the eras of their lives and work. Works presented will include Otto Respighi's "String Quartet in D Major," Gabriel Fauré's "Bonne Chanson," and Erik Satie's "Cabaret Songs," among others.

Opus Nine Ensemble (Alysia Lee and Jarvis Benson, Artistic Directors) is a chamber group composed of strings, winds, piano and classical vocalists. Opus Nine is dedicated to approaching the most challenging and exciting concert repertoire with new ideas, dramatic modern contrasts, and passionate exuberance. Masterfully trained, prodigious, and ethnically diverse, all members are under the age of thirty and fresh from the top conservatories in America.

This event is generously supported by the Estate of Marion O. Naumburg.

The New York Society Library was founded in 1754, and is the city's oldest library. In the eighteenth century, an organization labeled "Society" meant that it was open to all-available to everyone throughout society. The Library is open to all for reading, reference, and most events, with circulation and other services by subscription. The beautiful landmarked building dates from 1917 and includes reading rooms, spaces for study, stacks, and an exhibition gallery. The Library has approximately 275,000 volumes and hosts a variety of special events, reading groups, workshops, as well as the New York City Book Awards.
