Yousuf Karsh: American Portraits

Second Installation, May 2 through Nov. 2

This installation includes a second selection of portraits by iconic photographer Yousuf Karsh in celebration of a gift of more than 100 works to the National Portrait Gallery.

Photographs include Clark Gable, Martha Graham, Helen Keller, the Apollo XI Crew, Isamu Noguchi, Andy Warhol and Elie Wiesel.

Studio Time: Caitlin Teal Price | Saturday, May 10, 10:15 a.m. to noon

Portrait Competition finalist Caitlin Teal Price leads this session on photographing with natural light. This program is intended for adult audiences. Meet the Author: Warren Perry | Saturday, May 10, noon

National Portrait Gallery researcher E. Warren Perry discusses his co-authored book "Elvis 1956," which the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame calls "the first and last unguarded look at Elvis." Following the talk, Perry will sign copies of his book in the G Street lobby. Meet at the portrait of Elvis Presley in "American Cool" on the second floor.

Meet the Author: Robert Hilburn | Saturday, May 10, 2 p.m.

The chief music critic and pop music editor for the Los Angeles Times for more than three decades, Robert Hilburn discusses "Johnny Cash: The Life," "a thorough and thoughtful portrait of the Man in Black, . . . [with] a deep appreciation of his artistry" (New York Times). Hilburn will sign copies of his book in the F Street lobby. Meet at the portrait of Johnny Cash in "American Cool" on the second floor.

Nigel Hamilton is a best-selling award-winning biographer of political and military leaders, including John F. Kennedy and Bill Clinton. Join Hamilton as he discusses his brand new work, "Franklin D Roosevelt: Mantle of Command." A book-signing will follow in the G Street lobby.

Curator's Tour: "Face Value: Portraiture in the Age of Abstraction" | Saturday, May 17, 2 p.m.

Senior Historian David Ward leads a tour of the exhibition "Face Value: Portraiture in the Age of Abstraction." Meet at the exhibition entrance on the second floor.

Cineconcert: Andrew E. Simpson and "Ben-Hur" | Sunday, May 18, 1 p.m.

Nan Tucker McEvoy Auditorium

Acclaimed pianist and composer Andrew E. Simpson will premiere his original score for "Ben-Hur" (1925) during a screening of the film. This epic adventure film, featuring high-speed chariot races and action-packed battles, was one of the most elaborate, expensive and technically advanced movies of the silent era.This program is free, but tickets are required. Pick up free tickets beginning at 12:30 p.m. in the G Street Lobby. Limit two tickets per person.

Young visitors and their families may drop in to listen to a story about an influential person in the Portrait Gallery's collection and create a piece of art inspired by his or her life and portrait.

Portrait Discovery Kits | Saturdays,May 3, 17, 24 and 31, 1 to 4 p.m., and Sundays, May 4, 11, 18 and 25, 2 to 5 p.m.

Portrait Discovery Kits offer a self-guided tour, "Seek and Find" cards, "Portrait Detective" and "Historian Guides," and a "Compare and Contrast" activity using a doll. Visitors can check out kits just outside of the education center, room E151 on the first floor.

Young Portrait Explorers: Julia Child | May 12, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Toddlers up to age five and their adult companions are invited to become a Young Portrait Explorer and discover the National Portrait Gallery through history and art. Registration required: http://www.eventbrite.com/org/810710525. Class size is limited to 25 participants.
