National Portrait Gallery Has New Exhibit MR. LINCOLN'S WASHINGTON and More This Holiday Season
Take a look at the District of Columbia during Abraham Lincoln's time through large-format reproductions of original photographs, prints, drawings and maps that document how the Civil War affected daily life in the area.
Special focus centers on activities in and around the historic Patent Office Building-now home to the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery and American Art Museum. The exhibition includes views of forts and hospitals and landmarks such as the Navy Yard, Sixth Street Wharf, Capitol, White House, Ford's Theatre and the Old Capitol Prison. Also included are the images of notable Washington personalities-statesmen, spies, soldiers and nurses-who gave the city a sense of national purpose, glamour and intrigue during four years of war.

Winter Break Drop-In Programs Monday, Dec. 23. 1:00-4:00 p.m.: "Beautiful Mess!"-try your hand at charcoal drawing Thursday, Dec. 26, 1:00-4:00 p.m.: "Additive Sculpture"-create a sculpture using Model Magic Avoid the winter-break "blahs" by stopping by to create a piece of art or borrow a Portrait Discovery Kit. This drop-in program is geared toward children ages five and older and their adult companion. |

Open Studio Fridays Dec. 6, 13, 20, 27, 1:00-4:00 p.m. Visitors of all ages are welcome to explore different selections of art materials each week.
Young Portrait Explorers-Julia Child Monday, Dec. 9, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Toddlers up to age five and their adult companions are invited to become a Young Portrait Explorer and discover the National Portrait Gallery through history and art. Portrait Discovery Kits are an interactive and imaginative way for visitors to learn more about people who are in the National Portrait Gallery and their contributions to American history.

Facing History: Be the Artist Family Program-Looking at the Art of Lucy Fradkin Saturday, Dec. 21, 2:00-4:00 p.m. This class is designed for children ages five and older. Participants will take a look at the portrait by Lucy Fradkin in the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition and create a multimedia piece.
