Gutenberg! The Musical!, the award-winning hit of the 2006 New York Musical Theatre Festival, will transfer to 59E59 Theaters (59 East 59th Street) for a strictly-limited Off-Broadway engagement.

Written by Anthony King and Scott Brown (winners of the 2006 NYMF Award for Excellence in Musical Theatre Writing – Book) and starring Christopher Fitzgerald and Jeremy Shamos (winners of the 2006 NYMF Award for Outstanding Individual Performances), Gutenberg! The Musical! will begin previews on Tuesday, November 21, 2006.  Directed by Alex Timbers, Gutenberg! The Musical! will be performed through Sunday, December 31.  The opening is scheduled for Sunday, December 3 at 7:15 PM.

"In the two-man musical spoof, a pair of aspiring playwrights, Bud Davenport and Doug Simon, perform a backers' audition for their new project - a great big musical about printing press inventor Johann Gutenberg. They hope that one of the producers in the audience will give them a Broadway contract - fulfilling their ill-advised dreams.  With an unending supply of charm, enthusiasm and idiocy, and accompanied by Larry, their pianist, Bud and Doug sing all the songs and play all the parts in their crass historical epic, using only baseball caps to differentiate between the show's 30 characters," as press notes describe the show.

Fitzgerald has been seen on Broadway in Wicked and Amour, while Shamos has been seen on New York stages in Reckless, The Rivals and Miss Witherspoon, among others.

Gutenberg! The Musical! will be presented Off-Broadway by Trevor Brown, Ron Kastner, Terry Allen Kramer and Joseph Smith.

Gutenberg! The Musical! was first developed at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in 2003. An excerpt of the musical was showcased at the 2005

New York Musical Theatre Festival as part of the NYMF Comedy Series.  Gutenberg! The Musical! had its world premiere in a critically acclaimed production at The Jermyn Street Theatre in London in January 2006.  The U.S. premiere was presented this past September as part of the 2006 New York Musical Theatre Festival.  Prior to the U.S. premiere this past September, which starred Fitzgerald and Shamos, all previous presentations and productions were devised and performed by the authors, Anthony King and Scott Brown.
