NYC Students Give Mom a Unique Mother's Day Gift 5/9

On May 9, 2010 150 of New York City's best young ballroom dancers will show off their moves in the fox trot, cha cha, tango, waltz and the swing for their mothers on Mother's Day at the Dancing Classrooms 4th Annual Dance Festival.  The event is scheduled from 1:00 - 6:00 p.m. at Columbia University's Lerner Hall, 2920 Broadway in New York City.

A key portion of the Dance Festival will feature a parent/child round of competition as many of the young dancers compete with their mothers to see who is the best dancer in the family.

Students competing in this event are members of the Dancing Classrooms Academy, a weekend program composed of 11-17 year old students who previously participated in the Dancing Classrooms school-based program social development program.  Dancing Classrooms Academy participants come from all five NYC boroughs and is a program of American Ballroom Theater Company, a not-for-profit organization.

Dancing Classrooms is a social development program that utilizes ballroom dancing as a tool to change the lives of children.  Created by ballroom dancing legend Pierre Dulaine, Dancing Classrooms was provided to 24,000 NYC school children and nearly 50,000 children in 523 schools in 19 cities during the 2009-2010 school year.  Dancing Classrooms was featured in the 2005 documentary Mad Hot Ballroom and the movie Take the Lead with Antonio Banderas.  For more information about Dancing Classrooms: www.dancingclassrooms.com.
