Julia, a new musical based on the life of Old West madam Julia Bulette, will open at the Beckett Theater (410 W. 42nd St.) on Tuesday, October 4th and will play nine performances through October 9th, including several matinees.

An Equity-approved showcase presented by Capitol Opera, the show is written by Ken Mizak, directed by Kathleen Torchia and choreographed (as well as assistant-directed) by Pamela Lourentzos. "
The altruistic Julia-- nursemaid to the sick miners, volunteer firefighter, revered by all the miners, adored by one man, hated by another -- is the focus of this dramatic tour de force...Its story and characters are as true and as timeless as the Sierra Mountains," according to production notes.

The musical has long been in gestation. In 1983, Julia was produced in Sacramento, and toured in Northern California and Nevada the next year. A 2004 production in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania led to the current Capitol Opera production, which will star Torchia as Julia and Lynn Pannatoni as Julia's Shadow. Dominick Cicco, Tom Peasley, Randy Romine, Ilon Griffin, Jim Moyer, Mulch Hardwood and Allen Welch are also featured in Julia.

The show's performance schedule is Tuesday, October 4th at 8 PM, Wednesday, October 5th at 2 PM, Thursday, October 6th at 8:00 PM, Friday, October 7th at 8:00 PM, Saturday, October 8th at 2:00 PM & 8:00 PM, and Sunday, October 9th at 2:00 PM. Tickets, which are $15, can be ordered by calling TicketCentral 212-279-4200 or 916-201-7683 (leave a message for Kathleen). Tickets for Equity members are free with the presentation of a current card.
