Music Review: Garrett Clayton Pops Some Pops-Corn & Culture With His New Party Single BARBIE BOYS

Heigh Ho, dear lovely rainbow tribe, welcome back to Bobby’s CD sandbox where we offer our broken-down breakdowns of new music releases. So, strap in and get ready, as Bobby goes on the record ABOUT the record.

This week’s album entry in the BobbyFiles comes from actor/singer and sometimes murderous clown Garrett Clayton, whose new single BARBIE BOY is a pop culture callout to … all the things Barbie, Ken, and, perhaps, even teens on the beach (wink). “Hey frizzy boy get off your shelf” GC intones at the top of this song he has co-written with Jason Lehning & Melody Federer, which was released just Saturday and is, hopefully,  poised to burn up YouTubes and streams everywhere. The song is a fun, sexy, danceable number on its own, but that also begs for a hot extended dance mix or two to take it into the clubs.

The song is about getting ready to go out for a night on the town - all the things that must be done to style up for these Barbie boys, including manscaping and a daddy’s old spice. If Barbie were a gay boy who’s a little punk rock and looking for a “daddy,” this would be the song they would sing. Performance-wise Garrett is staying in the lower part of his massive range, with very sexy baritones in this one, like a kind of male punk rock sound from the '80s, similar to DEVO and others. Clayton, Lehning & Federer’s lyrics are a nifty little poem. They tell of this Barbie boy’s own Malibu dream house (“famous for all its joys”), all of it a touch naughty with suggestions of hanging out to hook up, maybe with a group.

keep it up all night
getting down with the Barbie boys
Getting down with the party boys”

The music is fast and furious with the guitar being played in a rock & roll/pop/punk mix juxtaposed over a total nod to the past with its MONKEES-style barroom piano banging throughout, using simple chord progressions pushing the tempo along and making it all totally danceable. Have A Listen…
 

The video Garrett and his team have produced is a patchwork of colors and movement with several pop culture images throughout, such as Olivia Newton Johns's PHYSICAL, and of course, plenty of call-outs to Aqua’s huge hit (1b+ views) BARBIE GIRL. Into that they’ve mixed in little call-outs from classic films and music videos… but no more spoilers here. Safe to say there are a lot of Easter Eggs past and present, and you will have to watch fast, and over and over again, to catch them all. When you do - comment them on Garrett’s YouTube, for sure. With this new song and video, BARBIE BOYS, Garrett Clayton continues to wave his rainbow flag, proving why he is one of our fave UBER-GAYS. The song is just for fun and, so, mission accomplished Garrett.
