More Casting Announced for LA Urinetown, with Rubinstein

More casting has been announced for an upcoming Los Angeles production of Urinetown starring Tony Award-winner John Rubinstein in the role of villainous toilet tycoon Caldwell B. Cladwell.

Presented by the Interact Theatre Company, the show will run from September 16th through October 22nd at the Matrix Theatre (7657 Melrose Ave.).  Also featuring "Days of Our Lives" star Matthew Ashford as Senator Fipp, with Annie Abbott, Doug Ballard, Rona Benson, James Calvert, Amanda Carlin, Emily Janice Card, James Cooper, Robert Briscoe Evans, Marc Fellner, James Greene, Steven Hack, John Hemphill, Liz Herron, Rob Kahn, Jean Kauffman, Jason Lewis, Kelly Lohman, Sharon Madden, Tracy Powell, Melanie Rockwell, and Vanessa Whitney, Urinetown will include musical direction by Rubinstein. 

"The Tony Award-winning musical is set in a Gotham-like city overwrought by ecological disaster, Urinetown: The Musical is a tale of greed, corruption, love, and revolution in a time when water is worth its very weight in gold. A depletion of the earth's water supply has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The privilege to pee is regulated by a single, malevolent corporation, which profits by charging admission for one of mankind's most basic needs," state press notes.

The show is produced by the Interact Theatre Company, and features the original book and lyrics by Greg Kotis, and music and lyrics by Mark Hollmann.  It will be directed by Calvin Remsberg, with choreography by Tracy PowellUrinetown won 2002 Tony Awards' for Best Score, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Direction of a Musical.

Rubinstein is a Tony Award-winner for his performance in Children of a Lesser God, and also won a Theatre World Award for creating the title role of Pippin.  Other Broadway credits include Ragtime, Getting Away with Murder, Love Letters, M. Butterfly and Hurlyburly.  He is also a noted film and TV actor; he received an Emmy nomination for his work in "Family."
