From Miller Theatre Director Melissa Smey:
"This year's Bach series features some of my favorite New York artists, each with their own unique approach to Bach's music. We are incredibly excited to launch the series with Jennifer Koh's marathon performance of the complete solo sonatas and partitas by Bach. She first performed these works as a cycle on Miller's lunchtime concert series on the Columbia campus, so it's particularly wonderful to be able to work with her again now that she's ready to tackle them together in one marathon concert. It's really a can't-miss highlight of the season."
The popular Bach and the Baroque series is back with two beloved returning performers and one group new to the series, in three concerts that investigate Bach's music in depth. Programs feature Bach's solo violin works, performed back-to-back over one afternoon; a recital mixing Bach keyboard works with those of the Romantic tradition that followed; and an evening centered on a cantata by one of Bach's heroes, Dietrich Buxtehude.
Jennifer Koh
Bach: The Complete Solo Violin WorksPerhaps Brahms best described what Bach achieved with his landmark solo violin works: "On one stave, for a small instrument, the man writes a whole world of the deepest thoughts and most powerful feelings." The exceptional violinist Jennifer Koh follows up her acclaimed rendition of these works, heard over several recitals in Miller's 2009-10 Lunchtime Concerts series, with this marathon performance of all six solo sonatas and partitas played over the course of a single afternoon. As described by The Strad, "Jennifer Koh is a risk-taking, high-octane player of the kind who grabs the listener by the ears and refuses to let go." With this ambitious undertaking, she proves critics right to call her performances "fiery and impassioned" and "a compelling mix of intelligence and freshness" (The New York Times).
Sonata No. 1 in G minor, BWV 1001
Partita No. 1 in B minor, BWV 1002
Sonata No. 2 in A minor, BWV 1003
Partita No. 2 in D minor, BWV 1004
Sonata No. 3 in C Major, BWV 1005
Partita No. 3 in E Major, BWV 1006BIOS: Violinist Jennifer Koh is recognized in the United States and abroad for her ability to fuse intensity of temperament with a classical poise and elegance. Since she came to international attention in 1994 as winner of the Tchaikovsky Competition, Koh has gone on to perform as guest soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Chicago Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, St. Louis Symphony, National Symphony of Washington, D.C., the Moscow Radio Symphony, and the Helsinki and Czech Philharmonics. She is an active chamber musician and recitalist, performing in New York, Philadelphia, and other centers with such distinguished artists as Jaime Laredo and Leon Fleisher. She is heard annually at the Spoleto Festival in Italy. Koh is a graduate of Oberlin College and an alumna of the Curtis Institute.
