Meryl Streep and Phyllida Lloyd to Reunite for Thatcher Biopic?

The Hollywood Reporter reports that Meryl Streep may reunite with 'Mamma Mia!' director Phyllida Lloyd (MAMMA MIA!, Mary Stuart) for 'Thatcher,' a biopic of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. According to the report, Jim Broadbent is being courted for the role of Denis Thatcher. 'Thatcher' is set to cover the seventeen days leading into the Falklands War of 1982. There is no word on a production schedule.

'Thatcher' will be produced by Damien Jones, who conceived the film with screenwriter Brian Fillis. It is being developed by Pathe and BBC Films.

Phyllida Lloyd's previous theatre directing credits include Mary Stuart (Donmar Warehouse, Broadway), BOSTON MARRIAGE (Donmar Warehouse), THE THREEPENNY OPERA (Donmar Warehouse), WILD EAST (Royal Court), SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION (Royal Court), HYSTERIA (Royal Court), and MAMMA MIA! (West End, Broadway, and worldwide). Also an acclaimed opera director, Lloyd has worked with Opera North and the ENO. For film, she directed 'Mamma Mia!' which opened worldwide July 2008.

Meryl Streep made her professional stage debut in 1971's THE PLAYBOY OF SEVILLE, and her screen debut came in the made-for-television movie 'The Deadliest Season' in 1977. In that same year, she made her film debut with 'Julia.' Both critical and commercial success came soon with roles in 'The Deer Hunter' and 'Kramer vs. Kramer,' the former giving Streep her first Oscar nomination and the latter her first win. She later won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in 'Sophie's Choice' in 1982.

Streep has received 16 Academy Award nominations, winning two, and 25 Golden Globe nominations, winning seven, more nominations than any other actor in the history of either award. Her work has also earned her two Emmy Awards, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, a Cannes Film Festival award, four New York Film Critics Circle Awards, five Grammy Award nominations, a BAFTA award, an Australian Film Institute Award, and a Tony Award nomination.
